  • building in the winter.

as many of you know, i moved all of my power tools out of my shop into a trailer in anticipation of flood waters. it appears that no flood will happen. apperently, jerry had his people turn down the damn dams and the level is going down.
i knew if i didnt take advantage of the only half full shop i would regret it so yesterday i guted it. removed all my lumber, shelves, pegboard/plywood inner walls.
installed R13 kraftfaced insulation in the walls and roof. put 3/4 polystirien on the floor and covered with 3/4 waferboard. put all my pegboard and ply baesck up. put all the shelves back up. wow! that was a lot of work. but when i can work in the winter, i will have no regrets.
i will bring the tablesaw, benchtop power tools, and handheld power tools next weekend then it will be time to get busy.

    Re: building in the winter.

Did my shop last year. Not only working in the winter is better. The temp won't fluctuate as much from day to night keeping your tools in a steadier temp. Less condensation. Makes it much better to bring to temp when you want to work in it too.

    Let alone the fuel savings.

    Have fun

          Re: building in the winter.

Two of the best upgrade things I've done "home wise" is to ditch my old wooden garage door and replace it with an insulated aluminum door and install a natural gas heater in the garage. I can keep it at a constant 50 F all winter long and when I get home from work have it up to 70 F in about 15 minutes. I notice very little difference in my gas bill. Now I just need to add more insulation in the attic above the garage.

Arlis, drop me a PM when you're going to be heading this way next time.

Geez Arlis, I might have to contract you to build me stuff in the winter

Been too hot to put my insulation up in the garage, I hope to get the two leaks in the roof fixed and the insulation up before snow flies.

A guy down the street has a forced air propane heater he is going to give me, I wonder how safe that is with sawdust in the air?
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

i have a small torpedo heater as well. i use a piece of plate steel and aim the heater at it. it gets turned off when the room gets hot then i began my work.
