Just the answer I was looking for - thanks a lot, Paul. =) That simplifies things a lot for me. Just confirm as well, that the cabinet has no internal bracing? It's just a box, basically?

I think it might have had a bit of bracing, but nothing fancy. 2 or 3 dowels or scraps tying the side walls together here and there would be fine.

OK - and, just to be clear, by "scraps tying the side walls together", you mean braces that have holes in them, so as NOT to create separate chambers, correct?

Right. I mean, you could separate it into chambers, but it's not necessary with this design.

Sorry to bump this thread again, but I'm about to order the MDF I need (this is for the Overnight Sensations CC build, as you recall) and I'm simply not sure about the back - from your drawings, I just noticed that it looks like you've no rear baffle at all? In other words, the wall is acting as the back portion of the speaker, is that correct? If so, I guess I'll be adding another 1/2" to the depth of the speaker, because I'll want to be enclosing it.

Or, am I misreading and you DO want a rear baffle, but maintaining 5" depth?

The cabinet drawing in the first post clearly shows a back on the cabinet.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but did you ever finish this design Paul? I am looking to build a wall mounted speaker for my living room (wife banned my towers to the basement), and this design might be just the ticket.

Well, I can give you what I've done (ND105-4 + ND90-9 + ND20FB and HiVi B4n + B3N + ND20FB versions), although they need a sub, and therefore didn't quite meet my design requirements. I've had a back-burner version for quite a long time that--if it works--won't require subs. But I just haven't gotten around to building prototype cabinets for it.

Honestly, this project wore me out. I'm on my 4th or 5th set of prototype cabinets for it; and just couldn't get the bass I wanted (hoffman's iron law and all that). So... maybe this is one of those times I enlist the help of another cabinetmaker if I ever want to finish the project.

Thanks for the reply Paul. I just took a look at the B4n simulation using Jeff's woofer box designer, and it looks like a F3 of 50 hz is possible in a vented enclosure. I am guessing you were wanting something into the 40's?

Right now I am torn between trying this 3-way design (vented or PR enclosure) or a two-way using silver flute woofers and the Dayton silkie. The silver flute design could be a single W20RC38-08 8" or a dual W14RC25-04 5-1/2" wired in series. Both have about the same F3 frequency in 20 L volume with the Dayton 8" PR. I am really looking to keep cost down below $100 each (not including cabinet cost). Any thoughts on which design would be best?

Yeah I was reading your build thread earlier ckmoore. That is basically what I want to build, but I won't be using a sub for this room, so I would like the speakers to extend to 50 hz if possible. I am basically trying to defy the laws of physics by making a small speaker have bass response. The room I am designing these for is not my theatre room, and these will be used with TV and light music during dinner and such. In all honesty, anything will be better than the TV speakers that we are currently using.

I am thinking of just doing the MTM overnight sensations as they will probably be adequate, but I think a 3-way would be nicer. I have a very good power amp (4 ohm capable too), so power isn't an issue. Thoughts on a 3-way using two M3N mids wired in parallel, and M6N as a woofer (tweeter to be determined)?

I just can't seem to find any DIY designs out there for full range on-the-wall speakers.

Paul, I would be willing to be your guinea pig on the larger cabinet size. I am also only an hour away from Chicago so you would be able to see/listen to the final result. Just let me know what you were thinking.

Another idea (which I am sure you have already thought of).....how would a 2.5 way speaker with 4 HiVi B4N's wired in series-parallel do? Could you have the low pass on the two extra woofers set at about 120 hz to boost your low end? I know that baffle step isn't an issue for wall mounted speakers in the sub 400 hz range, but can you use a half way design to boost low end bass for this application?

Paul, any idea how much larger you will require the cabinet to be? Would it be beneficial to replace the dual B3Ns with a dome midrange like the RS52AN-8 or a DC50FA-8 in order to just have one large cabinet? That might be enough additional volume without increasing the outside box size.
