  • Anyone have advice on a stylus

I came home today to find my phonograph stylus broken off I need to replace it but i have never bought one before, and I am not familiar with the different types. The brand of turntable is a Dual audio Im not a dj and most the music i listen to is like pink floyd, the doors, grand Funk, and that type of stuff my budjet is about $100 but not strict if there is something good that costs a little more. I did not break the needle it was vandalized by my roommates @$$hole kid. any help would be much appreciated thanks

Well, the stylus is an important part of the system. You should be able to easily remove it from the cartridge. (The cartridge is the larger part that's mounted to the tone arm.)

You'll need a replacement styus that'll fit the cartridge.

If the same roomates are still around messing with (er, listening to) your gear, I'd not invest in anything expensive.

They were not lisening to my gear they were intentionally vandalizing my gear and it has been moved out. My amplifier was stomped on at the same time but I think I can fix that.

Wow. I'm sorry to hear that. I'd tell that kid where he could put the needle.

That said some Duals have a proprietary cartridge/stylus and can only be replaced with another dual cart. You should be able to find all the info on your model HERE, and here is a good site for replacement parts that may be of help.

Sorry to hear about the damage. Dual didn't make phono cartridges that I know of. I'm guessing it might be a Shure, only because they were one of the most popular back in the day. If you can figure out which cartridge you have, you can probably buy a new stylus for it. Just be careful about Ebay - lots of inferior junk out there. You might look at needledoctor.com Not cheap, but it's the real stuff. Depending on it's age, it might time to replace the entire cartridge. The Shure M97XE is in your budget and gets good reviews.

And is much cheaper elsewhere: http://www.google.com/products/catal...ed=0CFoQ8wIwAA

I've been using this cartridge for about 8 months. It's a little on the warm side, but sounds very nice for the $$$.

If he has a CS series Dual for example he will not be able to use just any cart/stylus, just the ULM-Ortofon made specifically for Duals. There may be other exceptions in their lineup. So he needs to check the Dual link I provided earlier which will have any and all info regarding all Dual turntables and their requirements.

KAB Electro Acoustics has been very helpful for me:

Kevin has helped me get parts and belts for a couple of 70's-era turntables, a Yamaha and Setton. And a stylus for my older Grado cartridge. Knowledgeable, probably knows what will work. Or these guys:

Didn't those use the Shure M91ED? If so, you can find inexpensive replacements on Ebay.

Re: Anyone have advice on a stylus

stylus says VN35HE the stylus head with the wires coming out the back says V15 III-DU I dont think the sure M97xE will work for me my tone arm has a lever to release the cartridge and it is glued to the cartridge so i think it requires a replacment stylus only If I could break the glue I think i could bolt the new one to the quick release possibly I sound like an idiot dont I. give me an engine and I will rebuild it in no time flat this stuff is foreign to me. You guys are more patient and caring than you probably should be. The websites you provided are pointing me in the right direction I just need to surf for a bit i think
