    Re: Anyone interested in a 10 x 17 baffle with W.G.

Here's the waveguide profile in question.

This all stems from that thread, and this particular one had really easy to work with results.

The baffle would be 1" thick, with a disc on the back for the tweeter to mount to. The WG is 2" deep overall.

I'm very tempted to take a pair. Any chance of knowing if these mate to other tweeters? I just don't want to be stck using the rs28. Definitely seems like a good deal considering you get a baffle out of it.

It would be nice considering the AC offset of the hr08w Pretty far back.

They will more than likely work with a number of different 28mm tweeters. Smaller one's will have a more difficult time. We'll be trying a couple different tweets here shortly, to pair with the Usher 8948A on Ed's baffle.

As a fellow Michigander this post made me smile. The Army has stuck me in El Paso, TX; which is about as different from Michigan as you can get. If I ever get home I'd love to see your work.

Thanks for that. It is a stack but the waveguide still has a round mouth rather than an elliptical or some other shape? I was asking because a few months before having to put the project on hold (which it still is at the moment) I asked a couple of machine shops on this side of the pond about CNCing waveguides with elliptical(ish) mouths into a stack of MDF panels. They raised the need to finish the waveguide surface by hand and I was hoping to get an idea of by how much from this exercise.

This is a round waveguide, with an elliptical profile. Cut into MDF, it will need to be "finished," hand sanding and a bit of lacquer/epoxy sealer to give it the smooth finish you need for paint. Overall, the WG is 8" in diameter, which gives frequency control to around 1200Hz according to the plots we took. With crossover applied, we're getting a 1000Hz LR4 acoustic HP function.

I'm going to refrain from buying any right now, as I need to finish a couple projects before I take on another.

These do seem awesome though and I hope you guys continue to make them and develope them further, as eventually I'd like a pair, or 3.

I'll commit to a pair. A pic would be nice. Pete, you're talking about a design with an Usher woofer and RS28 tweeter?

I'll be doing the build along with Pete, we'll do initial crossover modeling together then I'll work my magic on crossover voicing. Whatever we come up with, it won't be some simulated only result ... like everything we do the simulation is only the first step of the network, the final result will come from a couple weeks of listening and making tweaks along the way.

I think the Usher 8948A is for sure, I have 4 of them here and it's a fantastic woofer. IMO it's the best sounding of all the Usher 7"ers, and every bit the equal of a Scan 18W Revelator.

Tweeter is a bit unsure at this point. We already have experience with the RS28F in this waveguide from the Aurora/MiniByzi build, and they work extremely well together. However, I personally want to try something else in that waveguide as a point of comparison. But if we try something else and it falls short of what the RS28F is giving us, we won't end up using it. I'm looking for equal (or better) but different, but staying under $100 per tweeter. One thing I'm considering is having some thin 1/16" or so phenolic rings CNC's to replace the faceplate on whatever tweeter we use. That would allow for a flush mounting instead of having to deal with a concave factory face plate, and would also push the dome slighty into the throat of the waveguide. I'm thinking the HDS would be an excellent candidate.

If the end price puts it out of some peoples budget, I am sorry for that. However I have a very high standard, and think that this could be something that (Vapor Audio offerings excluded ) rivals any monitor out there under $5000 or so.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I'll have to push myself beyond my usual half a$$ed build. I look forward to seeing what you and Pete come up with.

Should make for a very nice project. I look forward to seeing the results. I've been interested in the Usher woofers for a long time now.

Also, I'll sand down the baffles to 220 grit. Sound good? I'd like to get 4 guys to order before I pick up sheets of 1" plum creek MDF. Give me some feed-back, guys.
OK, I'll commit to a pair. I'm not sure what your resources are but I would also consider getting some additional work done to my pair. I'm sure it would be easy for you to make the woofer cutout as well as the roundovers you mentioned. If you have the ability to finish them we can talk about that too. My only concern on the roundovers is that I want to use the RS225 woofer w/ a 8-3/4" outside diameter. The realestate on a 17 x 10 baffle goes pretty quick w/ an 8" waveguide and a 9" woofer. I do have the ability to truncate the woofer flange but I'm still not sure how much space that will save, my guess is approx 3/4" overall.
