Re: Anyone interested in a 10 x 17 baffle with W.G.
That locks really nice.

Can I get one of either the plastic or wood waveguides, either buy or borrow? I want to experiment with making a mold and this looks like the best combination of not too big/performance... Perhaps concrete will be the cheapest way to make these...

yes, where are we? are you able to make one full lenth? i want it for a tower. thirtysix or so inches tall.

I can send one of the waveguides I turned, or turn another if you have a preferred arc and opening for the cross section. I don't have MDF, but have Advantech, which is somewhat porous but could be used to form a mold. I also have Baltic Birch blanks glued up, solid wood is also an option.
These could be temporarily mount in a cabinet, or glued permanently.
Re: Anyone interested in a 10 x 17 baffle with W.G.
Hey guys. Ed's had a lot on his card recently. But I think he'll be ready soon. He reworked his setup to cut the baffles, and here's the latest result. I think he's ready to put his name on them now. I also believe he's bringing a few baffles to the Chicago DIY this weekend.
Wow! That is an object of desire you got there Pete! Have we done any measurements?
Thanks,
Dan
We did response and distortion testing at the beginning to develop a starting point crossover for voicing. The waveguide measurements for the RS28F are shown on the thread started by DanP, where this particular waveguide shape was investigated. It worked so well with the RS28F we had on hand that made us shift gears on a build and figure out a way to incorporate it.
The distortion plots we took of one crossover version showed amplifier-like distortion levels at greater than 90dB output, across the band. From there, its been subtle changes to some part values. No measurements since, only listening, and modeling to see what part value changes will do to certain bands. I think we're done at this point. I'm looking forward to hear what the guys in Chicago like and don't like about the sound. I'm sure they'll be stunned by the look of the paint job Ed's putting on these.
All the baffles he'll be making in reference to this thread, will use the same WG profile as shown in the picture. We worked out a few bugs in the original method, and as you can see, the results are the beautiful consistency you see pictured.
Nice! So should I order some tweeters now while they are on sale?
Dan
Well, you can see what you have to work with from those plots. The response didn't change all that much when in the baffle pictured above. On the 10x17 baffle, I've no doubt that it will be just as easy to work with. It certainly allows you to cross the RS28F at a very low frequency, allowing you to more easily integrate an 8" woofer into the mix. Why it happened to work so well with the RS28F may be just pure luck.
Not sure how it works with other tweeters just yet, but I'd be shocked if other 26-30mm domes didn't find a home in this profile. The RS28F needs a bit of shaping to smooth back to flat, but it doesn't have to be too complicated from a component count. Other tweeters may need no shaping at all.
The main benefit is the boost at 1KHz over a flat baffle, and how a simple crossover can use the natural response to fashion a 1KHz LR4 acoustic target. The waveguide loading provides almost 15dB benefit over a flat baffle implementation at the low end in terms of linearity and available dynamic range.

Would you be evaluating these as well?

I have an interest in waveguides for XT25TG and/or RS28. I have both of those tweeters and a few others.
It seems that the interface (the small/back end of the waveguide) between the waveguide & tweeter is quite important and I'm not sure what the criteria are for a good design.
I'm happy to take measurements, maybe willing to try other tweeters if requested, and, there are a few different woofers I have in mind/inventory that I would be happy to design a crossover for with the wg/tweeter combination:
Peerless HDS Nomex 6.5", Exodus EX-6.5, Exodus Anarchy, and Seas ER18RNX
If you sent me a waveuide turned from a porous material I would want to fill and sand the surface - perhaps oil based polyurethane, or, some type of sanding sealer. Just about any material would be fine. Avoiding large voids which have to be filled with some kind of paste would be preferable.
I could send some payment, or, just borrow the waveguide(s).
I think concrete would be a good material for producing multiple waveguides inexpensively? Perhaps, made to a size that would fit in the USPS Priority Mail Large or Medium Flat Rate Box? Concrete waveguides might be able to ship two to a box, perhaps? It's OK if they're heavy, as long as the pair is under 20 lbs they can ship for about $10...

That could/should make for a very impressive speaker on several fronts. Makes me want to build one. Personally I don't know that I'd want to stray too much from the RS28. It just looks(graphs) too good in that design.
