  • Looking for input re RS225/RS28 w/ waveguide design

My current situation hasn’t allowed me to follow the forum as much as I used to. Also, when I was following it I didn’t keep up on a lot of the waveguide topics (esp the loads of EconoWave discussions). However, I am now interested in D Rose’s baffle for the .75cf Dayton boxes. I have gone back and forth on what speakers to build next and I keep coming back to Mark K’s RS225/RS28. My plans were to build this in a Dayton box. I might have already pulled the trigger on it if the crossovers weren’t so pricey (yes, I know there is a budget version as well). I might also use a Behringer DCX but I’ve never used one so the learning curve kind of adds another element to the build.

I guess my biggest question is whether or not the drivers in Mark K’s design would benefit from Rose’s baffles if the crossover were tweaked accordingly. What would the benefit be?

I already have a set of mismatched RS28’s (one shielded, one not) but I would like to pick up a pair of the RS28F’s while they are on sale. From what I have read all 3 of these SHOULD be interchangeable but I would prefer to have a “matched” pair. I also have the RS225’s on hand.

I had contemplated doing something very close to this, but decided to wait until I had more experience under my belt. I was going to try to incorporate Mark K's waveguide loaded RS28 idea into a 2.5 TMM using two RS225's. Looking forward to seeing how it goes for you.

my thoughts are that it would work just fine. it would probably benifit from a little crossover point as well. maybe 1k considering its a 8".

Huge benefit both in performance and parts count. That WG will allow you to hit 1KHz no problem with a fairly simple tweeter network, and with a lot more headroom available for the RS28F over a flat baffle install. You'll still have to pay attention to breakup modes in the RS225.

Have you decided on what are you going to do for the crossover?

I have also been meaning to build a set of the Mark K's 2 way in the PE cabs so I am curious.

Re: Looking for input re RS225/RS28 w/ waveguide design

            Cyber,
Most likely I am going to use a DCX. I like to be able to play w/ things and a passive network seems pricey (in this case) and permanent. I already have the DCX and I scored a 7ch B&K amp on my local Craigslist not too long ago so I have plenty of options in that regard. In addition to that I have considered adding a second RS225 to each side for a 2.5 way configuation. I may or may not use the Dayton cabs for the second pair due to price (I keep my fingers crossed that the black cabs will be DOTD eventually).

All of this assumes that I don't change my mind in the next year since it will be that long before I will be able to work on anything again. But I do have everything except the cabs on hand so my guess is that it will happen. The biggest reason I bring it up now though was to see if D Rose's waveguide baffles were worth considering. I replied on his post regarding them but I haven't heard anything since.

Hope that helps you in some way
            Thanks,
            Aaron

The W.G. loaded baffles are under production as of tonight. I'm trying to get a running tally, so send me a PM if you'd like something.
