Don't use a generalization like that with these. They are folded into roughly a square driver, they are not narrow like typical planars and ribbons. Having said that, the 4001 measures very nicely off-axis. I'm not exactly sure how it manages this unless it has something to do with the pleats.

...and thusly why I didn't include AMT in that statement. I really didn't know.
I know the LCY 'split-ribbon' is supposed to be an improvement on the off-axis responses, but I've not seen evidence of those either...

So even vertical off-axis is good on the little Airbornes?
      Cool!

The LCY's don't necessarily have "better" dispersion than other ribbons, they have more uniform dispersion by keeping the dimensions close to the same whether vertically or horizontally. By doing this they radiate more like a dome tweeter than like other ribbons.

Jeff, any plans on testing the 5002?

I found a Ribbon Pleater on eBay, so figured I should share this... may save our DIY friends a little time and maybe a little hassle. At $50 its a bit steep, but hey... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ribbon-Pleat...item19c09a14d7

Thanks for all the great info in this post series btw. It's been enlightening.

This is a bit off-the-wall, but does anyone know if these could be rejiggered into headphone transducers? I saw someone use then BG Neo3s for this purpose, and aside from the copious duct tape, I hear it worked pretty well.

Not going to get too excited about yet another little tweety tweeter . . . there are plenty of reasonably good (and cheap) monopole domes, planars and ribbons that are fine from 2-2.5kHz on up if they're just going on a conventional two (or even three) way box . . .
The Beyma TPL-150 reputedly does this very well, but the price tag is absolutely staggering.

Thread bump- has anyone tried dying the pleats? I really hate the yellow colour of the cheaper amt offerings and a huge price gap to the black pleat beymas and AC's

To my knowledge, the Beyma and AC are clear material.

I just discovered this JB originated thread today. I too fell in love with the AMT tweeter after buying a pair of Dayton B652 Air models, testing the little AMT in that model and modding that speaker to sound much better. After going thru SS dome and Viva ring radiator in my Intimates, I finally settled on Mundorf AMTs. They are built like a tank and sound great with low distortion. I have a thread here that details the upgrade from the Vifa RR's to the AMT's. The final design with the AMT's made an appearance at last fall's RMAF in the Madisound room. A parts kit is now available. That's all I'll say.

Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

                                Hi Carl,

Did you also compare to the AC AST2560 too? There's a BIG difference in price between the Mundorf and the AST2560.
