It would. Thought about it, but if you look at the distortion plot it really is not hurting all that much. While these are full of "color", it does not stick out like a soar thumb. Going to 4 ohms as well lowers that bump another 2dB or so. The point is simple, so I may live with the caveat. That's the best thing about these, they are easy to play with. Funny how a big cone tweeter acts like a small waveguide...

I have a bunch of those Sonys as well....but I've not started anything just yet. I'm happy to see that area around 5k looking relatively flattish after all the talk about the "5k ringing problem"

Did you do any damping to the stamped frame on yours?
Not yet, the drivers are not even gasketed yet. Just built the cabs and threw them in with some stuffing. It should only get better with some gasketing material and finish work. The frame does not seem to be all that much of an issue.

The "5k ring" was easily tamed by the inductor. There is such an overlap between the woofer and tweeter, the inductor pushed it low enough to take it out of the equation. Unlike the tweeter's 1K peak, it was audible running full range.

Yes, great job indeed. As the crossover was being explained before we listened to these yesterday, that was the first thing that came to mind...simple often works very well!

I think they not only fit their original design intent, but are capable of much more. Nicely done!

Congrats Mike. I'm glad it worked out.

I'm glad Ive got 25 of these to play with at some point. I think I'll be dabbing some silicone on the back of the stamped basket and use fat headed screws or washers so I don't damage it when installing them.

                1mH inductor on the woofah

                1uF cap on the tweeter

3 or 4 ohm resistor (whichever flavor you like) on the tweeter.

                Done.

Did you post internal cabinet volume and/dimensions, baffle dimensions and driver placement?

                    No fancy drawing, but....

                    11"H x 7"W x 5.25"D External dimensions using 0.5" thick MDF. 0.15ft3.

Tweeter center is 2.5" from the top, mirror imaged 0.5" in a l/r pair.

Woofer is 7 5/16 from the top of the cab, on center.

3/8" rounds on the sides for diffraction.

Woofer gets a 4-7/8's cutout, tweeter gets a 3" cutout. No countersinking.

Heavily stuffed interior of the cab.

                    Easy, that's about it!

Thanks Johnny. It is amazingly ironic how good these sound. So much fun too to just design and have a little fun tinkering for the heck of it. Ultimately, they will be used with a Lepai amp in my Wife's classroom, but it's the second pair that will be mine! I had to build two at a time... They are too cheap not to!

                    I am thinking presents, too.

Thanks for the design. I've been waiting for a design using the Sony.

I have a noob question for ya...when you say

                        "1mH inductor on the woofah

                        1uF cap on the tweeter

3 or 4 ohm resistor (whichever flavor you like) on the tweeter."

i assume thats 1mh on the + side of the woofer. and is the cap and resistor in series on the + of the tweeter?

It does not matter. It's a/c

What does matter (that I forgot to mention) is the phase is inverted on the tweeter. so the + lead out from the xover goes to the - terminal and vice/versa.

Little details, usually wrapped up when I release the build notes, this one seems to be happening real-time.

How's the bass output on that Sony driver? What cabinet alignment did you choose for it?

This thread may have convinced me to design something using that sony driver and this Tymphany fullrange:

                            Modding the Lepai T-Amp

The buyout is not much of a bass unit. Maybe 80 Hz in a small sealed box? I wouldn't pair that full range with the Sony.

What would be the difference between pairing it with the Sony and using the cone tweeter/mid in this thread? I had imagined that I would be able to cross lower if using the full range driver, and the Goldwood tweeter seems to be $0.75 more expensive per over the 2" fullrange if I'm looking at the correct one:

The sensitivity seems to match fairly well, to the point where I may even be able to get away without any resistors, making this an even cheaper two-element crossover.
