  • OT: Need Advice, Can't Get a Song Out of my Head!

For the last several days I've been flashing on one song. Not even one I like!
(Cher - Gypsies Tramps and Thieves)
Don't know if it's senior dementia, chemo side effects, drug flash backs. Tried listening to favorite albums. Nothing makes it go away!

Any curative thoughts? I know somebody else has encountered this!

Where are you John Galt? I may not be worthy, but I'm ready.

I suggest listening to it a few times in a row so that it goes from catchy to tiresome.

        +1

Can't stop thinking about a song? Go ahead and burn yourself out on it. It'll get out of your system pretty quickly.

          Been there, done that.
Meditators have a saying "don't think of an elephant", cuz you can't stop it by thinking about it.

Why is it always "trash" that gets stuck? Why can't it ever be Mozart's Requiem or Stravinsky?

So, no solution.... Maybe you could take a walk and listen to birds or the wind.

Yes, find a really bad tribute video on youtube with horrible visuals. Play over and over.

Try embracing it. It might be your destiny to have a new theme song.

Interetingly, I watched The 10th Kingdom last night (again) and there is a gypsy camp scene in it that I immediately thought that they should be playing that song. Eventually, one caharacter did do one line from it without music. If you watch it, then you can have that HORRIBLE scene stuck in your head along with the song.:p

The "Love Boat" theme usually works when I want to get rid of a song that has done an ear worm on me.

A sure cure: Expose yourself to one hour of concentrated listening, to white noise at about 90 db, three times daily. Headphones would be ideal...

I'm thinking this may just be the time to reach in your pocket and pull out the amnesia pen flasher from Men In Black - desparate times call for desparate measures!

Re: OT: Need Advice, Can't Get a Song Out of my Head!

In my experience the best way to handle the “jingle channel” is to recognize it for what it is. Fighting it will only make it worse since that fosters the “pink elephant” effect, which is a focus on the song which most likely is followed by a “fight or flee” response.

It will take some practice but whenever that song (or though) pops up, recognize it, don’t react to it (as with anger or frustration) and then move on. The last part is, of course, the hardest part but if you don’t react in a way that triggers the “fight” response it will be easier. When it pops up you could say to yourself “oh, it’s you again, I have better things to do, time to move on”. You will need to have something “more interesting” to do or thing about.

It won’t be easy at first but the more you practice the easier it will be. The “jingle channel” is a part of being human, more so with some than others. If it were not, there wouldn’t be catchy “jingles” for commercials or songs.

Actually he's got an ear worm. Thats where the catchy songs come from. See this instructional video: http://spongebob.nick.com/videos/cli...rm-clip-1.html

                            Play it backwards.

A dramatic and shocking demonstration of how your brain gets fooled to see something that is not there because of your biases, prejudices and expectations.
