Probably couldn't hurt to put a bead around where the surround meets the frame either...

I thought about that, but I don't want any of the red gasket sealer to show thru the cutouts. Plus, I guarantee I would mess up several drivers with my sub-par caulking skillz. LOL.

Any reason you didn't minimize CTC on the woofs? Is it a non-issue?

I could have pulled them about 1/4" closer but at that point, the frames would almost be touching and the roundovers on the cutouts would overlap.

Does it make a difference? Not for the way that they will be used -- up on a wall.

After doing this I thought it probably would be just as effective to use gasket tape...probably less of a hassle as well. Just thinking out loud, after the fact.

I've been using Seal N Peel for mounting drivers. If you need to remove them it comes off fairly easy. Nice thing is once you get the driver back off you can peel the caulk off without to much trouble. Home Depot carries it. If it squeezes out between the driver and baffle it comes off pretty easy. It's kind of like silicone but not sticky.

Only had a little time to work on these today. Installed one cross brace in the sub. Even without the rear baffle on, the cabinet is fairly dead. I added a little Peel & Seal to the hardwood braces as well.

Basically finished the sub box today -- still have to install the Aura woofer and the Dayton amp.

Sanded and ready for primer:



First coat of primer...like an idiot I used grey primer, even though I have a bunch of black. I let this grey dry and sprayed black over it.



Primer sanded -- ready for paint:

Definitely not perfect, but I'm not shooting for perfection and this is going to be hidden from view anyway. The textured paint actually sands well. I touched up a few rough spots and thought it might be tough with the texture, but it's all good.









Used a light textured matte black paint. I like it -- it helps to hide small flaws and it seems like a durable finish. Oh BTW -- all the paint is rattle can stuff from Home Depot.

Thanks!! Going overtime on this now. I'm off on a business trip tomorrow night for a week and my son wants to hand this system over on Monday. It's gonna be really really close. No time to break it it....so the initial listening tests tomorrow afternoon might not be the best gauge. I would like to stop in (at my son's school), say hello to the art teacher and see how the system is doing after a few weeks. If I can pull that off, I'll add a few pics of the permanent install @ the art room.

So.....got the braces installed and the front baffles mounted. Time for some flush-trimming. And of course....another problem -- the mother effin bearing decides to drop off the router bit!! I HATE 1/4" bits.

Time for bondo. This took more than three steps, but basically after a few applications and sanding in between, you can't tell there was a cock up. great for cars.....who'd a thunk it for speakers??

After the front baffle bondo repair and some other very minor bondo repairs, we mounted the rear baffles. these will be removable. Since we're rear mounting the drivers, I want to make sure there's easy access in case something blows. The only surface mounted driver is the wave-guide tweeter, and that's in a 3"x3" hole.

So we're using 6 large hurricane nuts/bolts to attach the rear baffle. I'll stick a gasket in there too later for a secure air seal. I used the caliper to take measurements to make sure I hit right in the middle of the braces.



I bought one of these flimsy drill press attachments and all I can say is you get what you pay for. This thing works, but it's a bit wobbly. First time I actually used it, and I'm pretty sure I could have eyeballed it and been ok, but hurricane nuts make me nervous so we used the press anyway. It does work, but you gotta have a steady hand for sure.



I used a forstner bit to make recesses for the rear baffle bolts. This wasn't my plan initially, but guess what? It's pretty hard to flush trim when you have bolts sticking out. It looks better with the flush-mounted bolts anyway. Also cut holes for the terminal cups.

Got the cabinets into the high-tech paint booth for some primer. There goes another rattle can.



So this is how they are sitting as I type. I'm gonna get crackin' on the XO's and pray that tomorrow is an error-free day of final steps for this project, because I don't think my flight is going to wait for this system to be done. :eek:

Thanks. I don't document too much, but when I do, I show errors and good stuff too. This hobby is awesome, but not easy. If you want perfection, you have to work for it big time. It doesn't come easy at all.
