  • I Am So Mad...At Myself

I've been working on and off on a tuned quarter wave transmission line since, oh, April/May of this year. Cabinets were completed and assembled in a week or two, and then they sat in my music room until first of Sept. Since then I've been veneering the cabinets between other projects.

Cabinets and bases are Walnut while the baffles were incredibly white tiger Maple. After playing with different dyes I settled on a "Dark Vintage Maple."

Well it's really YELLOW! Not only is it a bad match, there are glue stains where the dye was not taken up. Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can correct anything/everything or maybe make it worse.

For better or worse I expect to post pictures tomorrow. Those of you with sensitive eyes may want to wear sunglasses.

Dyes almost always change dramatically when a finish is applied.

Do some tests with some scrap and see.

Some oil based varnish/poly will make yellows more brown.
A coat of garnet shellac, then oil based varnish and it will mellow a good bit.
Waterlox or other phenolic based varnish will probably be ideal.
Avoid danish oil or other linseed oil based finishes. Linseed yellows.

The glue spots on the other hand...
    Sand them out and re-dye.

Getting the existing dye out will take strippers but it won't totally remove it all.
I would try and apply a darker dye right over what's on there now if the varnish didn't make the color more appealing.
