  • Dayton 8 WTW pre-build questions

So back in August I found this website while thinking about building some speakers. I knew once I looked around a bit that this was the place for me to figure out how to go about that. Since then I've learned a LOT from everyone on here and my sincerest thanks go out to all of those people.

After a lot of indecision, I decided beyond a doubt that the Dayton 8s were exactly what I needed. Now, I have in my possession, the drivers and crossover parts suggested by Chris Roemer, along with terminals, wire, clips and whatnot. I have attatched a crudely drawn in MS Paint, diagram of the XO.

The cab dimensions and port design, also suggested by CR are as follows:
3/4" MDF outer dims: 46" high, 10" wide, 15.75" deep
and a 12" long piece of 4" PVC for the port

I am going to pick up some solder, and get the XOs together ASAP. I am going to Lowes to get the MDF and they can cut the pieces out there, but I still don't know how I'm getting the holes and recesses cut. I want to use a router and circle jig, I just need to find one I can use to build these.

Finally, to the point, I realized after I ordered the parts, that I got the non-truncated tweeters, and the ones CR used were truncated, and close together. That was the last thing I forgot to look at before ordering, the driver placement. (well I asked and drew out diagrams and everything but it was an entirely different design, I believe) I am finally beginning the process of getting this all modeled out on a computer and am going to see if I can find a way to make it work with what I have. If not, I will most likely just buy the truncated ones and save the regulars for later. I was just posting to see if anyone had any input on this issue of driver placement, and also to ask if there would be any inherent problems in using this amp once its all put together:

Again, I cant say how much I appreciate all the help I've received thus far, and any future input that people may have. I am so excited about this project, sometimes I feel like Im going to have a seizure! I am looking into going to massage school, and have this dream of running my own office and building custom speakers on the side. But for now, Im starting with this and my roommate is probably next.

Love my Dayton 8's and built them nearly to the original specs. I don't have much to add as I have never seen CR's rendition, but can't wait to see what you produce!!

    Builds - C-Killa - Speedsters - LithMTM - Talking Sticks - Pocket Rockets - Khanspires - Dayton RS Center - RS225/28A - Kairos - Adelphos - SEOS TD12X - Dayton 8 - Needles - 871S - eD6c - Overnight Sensations - Tritrix (ported) - Lineup F4 - Stentorians - The Cheapies - Tub Thumpers - Barbells - Tuba HT - Numerous subwoofers - probably missing a few...... :p

You'll be fine. Keep them in a vertical line, as close as reasonably possible. Amp looks good if specs = reality.

XO is good to go. These cross near 2.5k.

WOW, those are beautiful! That is really inspiring, thank you for sharing. Yeah, the original design looks really nice, I went with Chris' design because the crossover is simpler and I have a feeling the smaller boxes would be more to my liking acoustically. I love the shiny wood grain on the baffles. How did you do the black finish? I'm still brainstorming on how to finish them.

And I just looked up that amp and decided I'll probably need to throw some more money into that and find something better, I just want something simple that will give me around 120W-150W RMS per channel.

Good luck on getting accurate cuts from Lowes. Members have reported mixed results on store cuts. Where do you live? Someone might be able to help you.

Re: Dayton 8 WTW pre-build questions

An old Hafler DH220 or P230 would work well with those. P230 would be preferable because it has a more robust output stage - better for the four ohm impedance of these MTM's.

They can be had in good shape for ~$150 on ebay if you keep an eye out, or better yet, PM Dick West here and see if he's got any extra's.

Re: Dayton 8 WTW pre-build questions

Thanks mono! These were the first painting endeavor I took on and messed it up with applying the clearcoat. I was not happy. So after ~$75 in rattle can and countless hours, I took them to an Auto Body shop and had them do the black and clearcoat. Best thing I ever did. $150 and now I can buff and polish these like a car! The $150 was worth it to me since it would have cost me another $50-$75 in paint and countless hours.....

I do plan on painting my next set myself, but will get them auto clearcoated again. I love the durability and ability to buff and polish. I don't have an HVLP and a big enough compressor to handle the job....

Good luck and make sure you post up a build thread. This is a great place to start and get assistance.

Oh, and my D8's have played fine on every plain Jane receiver I have had them hooked up to, and there have been one or two pretty crappy receivers :p.... I don't know how Chris's X-over differs, but I have never had an issue with a receiver and these. Now that they are on an XPA-3(which is total overkill for these) they have never sounded so good!

Re: Dayton 8 WTW pre-build questions

                  Mono,

PLEASE find a local furniture building or actual wood shop to do your cuts! Do not use Lowe's when precision is concerned. Go to a local shop, drop a few bucks on them, and be happy when you get home that your sides will all line up and look great.

Some, will / can get Lowes to cut perhaps with 1/8 - 1/4 inch larger widths, then go home and trim the sides down with a router after assembly. I usually try to get them (Home Depot) to cut at least an inch or more over, then go home and finish up on the table saw. I am still learning the router thingy.

If you happen to be in the NoVA area next weekend, I would be happy to help you with cutting at my house. IF you don't mind standing out in this lovely November weather. I think you said you are in western MD?

PS: Joey Butts speakers - been there, done that. They will crank! He added a sub to these for movies. He must be in league with the landlord since he hasn't been evicted yet for excessive earthquake noise!:p
If dynamite was dangerous, do you think they'd sell it to an idiot like me?

Thanks D! I did move in April and now live on the second of three floors. I'm in cahoots with the guy that lives below me. :D No worries there, though I did sell the sub but now have two of those 18's I'm sitting on for my future substage build......though that isn't all the drivers......yet.:D:D:D:eek::eek::eek:

I consider Pyle just a Pyle of Sh!t. They are some of the worst as far as dishonest and inflated power ratings are concerned.

This would be another option. Pretty decent basic receiver for the price. Well rated. It has discreet amplifier stages.

Awesome, the center point of the top woofer will be 7" from the top & I will put a 1/4" between drivers down the center line. Yeah I read some review on that receiver, apparently the manual clearly states that it is 20 WPC RMS the 120 is peak power. Good thing I looked it up.

the kid, I would LOVE some help this weekend on getting these cabs cut if you are interested. I dont know what else could work better than working with someone with experience in what Im doing. I'm even contemplating doing a slight flare on the port like this:

Take down my cell I trust this forum its 240-274-0343. Call or text I work M-F 10:30-7 and can only text while working. I would be for ever grateful if this works out
