Aero Striction/AMT pleated ribbon tweeters

Ok, I'm contemplating this technology for a higher end design. What's your take on them? Has anyone used any of the many available? How do they compare to the performance and sound of the Raal ribbons? Anyone have independent measurments available?

I guess there's a lot of versions out there. Parts Express has the Aurum Cantus AST2560 and AST 30100, which are said to cross as low as 1900 and 1100hz respectively and have replacement ribbons:

Solen has the Airborne RT-20021, RT-4001 and RT-5002 which are less expensive, don't appear to cross as low and don't have replaceable ribbons:

I know there are a number of others like Mundorf, Mark and David, etc. It looks like they are all very similar and might be rebrands from the same Chinese manufacturer. What's your take (hopefully based upon measurements and/or listening experience)? Hot new technology that delivers, or overprised gimmicks?

Then there is the ESS Heil redux. Heard one a RMAF, and while a tad bright in the set up, it had lots of detail and soundstage. It was engaging.

That Beyma TPL-150 looks like a beast of a tweeter.

It's very sensitive, able to be crossed at 1KHz, smooth response and a price to match.:eek:

Of the ones that I've heard, the bigger issue seems to be finding a midrange/midbass driver that can keep up with the AMT. Looking forward to your project.

Most seem to say the Neo 10 should be relegated to midrange duties. Have you run it as a mid-tweet? I have heard some rave of it as a midrange. Looks like Dennis Murphy is using the Neo 8 as a mid in his new commercial offerings, which is a testament about the quality of mids from the BG Neos. I would like to see a nice design integrating the Neo 8 or 10 and Neo 3. I know Lou C took a cut at it, but I have not seen too many others.

Scott Selin used the Neo3 and Neo8, along with a pair of RS150 in a design he brought to Iowa DIY a couple years back. That was one of the inspirations for Dan to identify the Neo10 as the mid for this new project. Scott's effort had very good mids and highs.

That ER-4 is not far from the small DIY RAAL. iirc. I don't know that I really want to go that high. I think I saw the Mundorf's up there around the Beyma.

I expect to use the Neo 10 from around 250-300hz to maybe 3khz or so. Dennis told me he considered the Neo10 and really liked it a lot. He sent me some of his on and off axis measurements in his open back cabinet. He didn't use it because it was just to big for his cabinet design and made the top section too tall. He felt it could be used as high as 5khz considering the off axis performance.

I've just never been that thrilled with the sound of the neo3, though I haven't heard it dipole, which could make a considerable difference. The RAAL we heard at Chicago seemed a huge step above. I'm wondering if there is something that can approach the RAAL sound, at not so high a price and perhaps can cross a little lower for the $.

Dan, I might be one of the only guys around with direct experience using the TPL-150 and Raal. That being said, they were both used in different designs and never a/b'd directly against each other. For ultimate power and dynamics, the TPL wins. For ultimate resolution without sounding bright or harsh, the Raal wins. We were never able to duplicate that open, effortless sound of the big Raal at the studio with the Tpl in the mains.

As far as the Neo10 is concerned, I am really enjoying it from 300 to 3KHz. It sounds good lower too, but depends on your average listening levels if you wanna push it lower. Any higher though and there is some kind of resonance going on that sounds harsh. You can see a peak in distortion in both my and Zaphs measurement at 5KHz.
