How would this tweeter location contribute to us physically moving around the listening area? What are the listening characteristics on-off-above-below for a line array such as this? I know this is a budget build, and I know some arrays use 72 tweeters for example....how would they differ for the above mentioned reasons?
If you listen to full size array with a line of tweeter or an array of full range drivers, vertical image doesn't change with the height. You can stand up on the chair or seat on the floor and the image will move with you. Horizontal response of a full size array (with tweeters) is also more stable. The effect is such: if you walk around the room, it'll feel like you walking closer and feather from actual sound stage or a musician. The point source effect of a loudspeaker producing sound, disappears.
With the center mounted tweeter it depends on the crossover point. A 2k crossover for this speaker was chosen based on nonlinear performance of the woofers first and then the tweeter. So, the range of frequencies produced by the woofers is somewhat limited and if you move around the speaker, it's audible. "They are here" effect is best in the sweet spot which is at the tweeter height (which is how the speaker is tuned). Off axis, high frequencies SPL audibly drop and that's directly dependent to tweeters axial response. If you would use a high quality woofers that can run in to 7-8k area, then a super tweeter will do and axial artifacts aren't that noticeable.

Those 3.5" Vifa fullrangers Zaph tested would be amazing in that application....not exactly cheap but man, what an array that would make. Of course you'd need to offset the bass response as you mentioned.....maybe a pair of 8 or 10" woofers or subs. There's a few buyout options.

1.5" radius!!??? I thought I was in the major leagues with my 1" cutter for my shaper:o. I'll have to decide whether I want to buy a 1-1/2" cutter, which will no doubt cost about as much as the entire project. I'm thinking of either recessing the tweeter from the backside (with face plate removed), or mounting flush conventionally with a trimmed face plate on the front of the baffle, assuming it's possible. I'll post a preliminary drawing that you can critique -- I'll modify it according to your instructions.

they would be very good for an array.

is also an excellent driver. Murphy corner line array?
It's a very elegant solution, with 2496 for a filter.

Ron, you don't have to have a waveguide like I did. Just recess the tweeter and make a smaller waveguide or increase the spacing between the #6 and #7 woofers or trim the faceplate.
The distance between #6 and #7 is 8".

major league ehh. look at the next picture. this ain't Photoshop.

wired the arrays today. Was a nice quite day to work. Bach on the radio all day long. Mass in G minor. Beautiful piece of music.
One note. Mark the back of the tweeter +/-. It's easy enough to figure the polarity if you have impulse response software. If you are just going to build the design, mark the polarity before throwing out the faceplate.
I think, I'll throw grill cloth on.

Shouldn't have any problem using that with a handheld router, right?

aha, if it weights half a ton, has a 3ph 220v 5hp motor and slow speed of about 3000rpm.
These heads weren't used for this project or any speaker making. I use them to make chairs.

Man Roman, that is nice work there. Someday maybe I will get that ambitious.

I *really* thought I had a shot at the under $200 class this year too with my current build. I cannot wait to hear them!

the head on the left is called a collet head. Knifes are adjustable with the screw. The size of the profile is huge so the amount of wood you'd be taking out safely is about 1/32.
Upper and lower colors are held together by 2 bolts and the knifes are custom.

                          Less then $150.
I was hoping to do it under a $100 but crossover gotten bigger. There's a couple of coils that will raise the price by $30. 2.7mH in one of the LCR and 1.3mH in the woofer section.

Hey Mike. Little Brit was very nice. It's just adding another 22 of Sony woofers only raises price by $15. My tweeters are also pricier.
The idea was to introduce Line array presentation on the cheap. I think it's a success but I'll let other people judge.
I'll lend them out if you are in the area. Think Phil may be first.
