New project layout: Sibling of 'Attitudes'; "Demeanor"...

Just holding space mostly for now, but I thought I'd post this up as a prelim, and to be ensuing build thread. In the same vein as the 'Attitudes', but hopefully more diminutive, maybe a bit leaner and meaner, while still envoking tons of opinions and smiling faces....

Drivers selected:
-Beston RT003C round planar-ribbon.
-HiVi DMB-A 2" dome-mid. (woulda been the DMN-A for a smaller footprint, but Neo $piked!)
-HiVi M6A Al/Mg 6.5" midbass. (and maybe a version with the RS180-4. I don't have these though- I have the M6A's.)

Synopsis- A hopefully same-size or smaller cab, with as-cohesive of a sound as the Attitudes had, at a lot lower cost with available drivers. Xovers may be outboard but diminutive and easily created, connected via Neutrik 4-poles.

As to the 'lobes' from the 'Tudes, the adapted lobes on the Demeanor will be triangular in shape, or a humongous chamfer.

Wow, that midrange has high power handling and sensitivity, looks great, and the price is terrific. Very cool!

Does it sound good?

The only thing more I could ask for is a protective screen, as on the RS series.

I know how the chamber-less DMN-A (mid of TM1a) sounded in the NEHD's, so I'm hoping I get a little more openness, and I've heard good reviews of the DMB-A from someone 'in the know'. It should sound very nice!

I may try and see what I can do about a screen. I have some ideas....

I should only hope so. I will take my time in voicing, and strive for the best simulation with applied data I can get. I may even use some of the Attitude's 'tricks' I picked up designing those. It should prove to be a great exercise.

One thing that will end up being likely different is the end result sensitivity and the nominal impedance. All of the drivers have highish sensitivity, unlike the RSS210, and the bass range will be 8 ohms on the M6, 4 ohms if I feel I need to try the RS180-4 instead.

Oh- the RT003C will be surface-mounted as the design is intended, and overlap the midrange a tad. Tentative xover points are 750-800, and 3-4kHz.

You can figure about 800-8kHz, but factoring in the CTC's really limits the topend. You might get 700 Hz if you comp the Fs, but that depends on how it sounds down there. I would say no higher than 5kHz due to spacings.

You keep coming up with interesting designs Wolf. First I get thinking that I'd like to try the TB W5-704D and presto I find the Canvas. Then I'm listening to the HiVi B4n and start wondering what the M6A is like and this comes along. I'm going to run out of places to put speakers at this rate and then my wife won't let me build anymore. Time to get creative. ;)

This looks like a cool project Wolf. I have heard good things about the M6a, and having another capable design using it would be great if you end up using it. I look forward to see how this develops.

I don't know. Meniscus carries both too.

The K1 is not at PE, Mad used to have an M3S that wasn't, MAD also carries the other variants of the RT1.3 and the L series, but PE does not.

There are quite a few PE does not stock.

I would likely think that myself. The move to the RS180-4 is kind of a just in case scenario, and only because the Attitudes used the RSS210HF-4. I'm betting I'll prefer the M6 since I prefer the M series to the RS series at this point, RSS need not apply- those are great.

To let some more information out- I have 8 of the HiVi M6a on hand, and finished T/S on them yesterday. AVG specs, high-low, and spec are as follows:

Re- 6.592 ohms, 6.7963-6.3058, 6.5
Fs- 59.283 Hz, 61.6405-57.0607, 47
Qes- 0.66533, 0.7118-0.6300, 0.5
Qms- 6.3990, 6.8418-6.1068, 2.76
Qts- 0.6025, 0.6387-0.5723, 0.43
Le- 0.62196 mH, 0.6519-0.6075, none
Vas- 11.4436 ltrs, 12.0870-10.5327, 18.7
BL- 7.28648, 7.4643-7.1912, none
1W/m- 87.2857 dB, 87.6201-87.1402, 88

They seem to be well within tolerances of each other, and 6 are from the same case-lot. The Bl is higher than lots of other 6.5" drivers I've measured too. Most are between 4 and 6.

And another thing- the 139 Sd spec that HiVi provides is larger than the peak-to-peak surround rule that most of us use. It is no more than 5" diameter on that measurement. Therefore, I'm using the calculated 126.67cm^2 spec.

EDIT- added box simulation and Xmax/Mach at 100dB. Note that the absorption calc is between heavy and lined, so lined with a little stuffing.
