I got a great deal on that too. 2 10' long boards, 12" wide for $25.

Where the boards already milled to 3/4" or did you have to do that? That sure is a good price though. I wish I could buy some around where I live.

Hey Paul. I'm a noob on the forum, but I have been building and tuning professional PA gear for years. I'm now looking at building in my home theater and a really intrigued by your XL versions of the Sensational Events. I know the magnet depth of the B4N was giving you some issues, but I love the idea due to the extra bass extension. I would love to see what you've come up with. Would you vent the B3N's as well? Thanks.

And by the way... To CKMoore; the build you've done here is beautiful. The walnut is awesome! Thanks for the inspiration.

FINALLY AN UPDATE!

They will be done tomorrow! I have the CC completed, and just need to finish final assembly on the L/R's.

Applying Duratex



First coat drying...



Waterlox applied... the bubbles had me concerned. I actually thought most of it was debris. I was slightly upset...




After 3 coats. 4 coats total. First coat applied with brush, final 3 wiped on.

Weight of speaker is 18.5 lbs. A bit lighter than I expected, so great for on-wall hanging.

Tomorrow I will post pics of hanging method.

If I make a grill (currently contemplating) I would use strong magnets that should stick to the baffle mounting screws.

Perfect! Had a look, these are right up my alley. Even simpler to build too (than the Event Horizons), by the looks of it. I really think I'll go for these - that or the Overnight Sensations Center. This is, of course, assuming I can use that center as a main. (I will be using a sub.)

So do you have a full BOM? Also - and pardon if this is a newbie question, but I've never worked with grilles - how did you intend on making, and mounting, the grille?

Vented, it should have some nice bass extension, similar to the OSMTM. However, to go vented, it will need a bigger cabinet. Not huge, but definitely a bit longer, and maybe a tad deeper. If you're interested I can sketch up something for you.

Paul - how would those work? 3 ports - 2 on each side and one on the top in the middle (assuming the speaker is horizontal in a center configuration); or all 3 ports facing the front? I would love to see what size a cabinet and port would be required to make these in a vented configuration. Seems like it would be perfect as center and mains and would fill 95% of HT needs with the sub only being required in certain movies.

How's the project coming?

I'm definitely interested in a ported version of this. How much bigger do you think the cabinet would need to be?

I'd like to keep depth to 7 inches and height to 6 inches. Length??

I am new to all of this so please excuse this question if it has an obvious answer.....With crossover work, could you use the Dayton ND-28F Tweeter instead of the ND-20FB??

Yes, these will definitely require a sub.

But I did finish the enclosure of one and put it into service as the center channel, and replaced my interim mains with my OS's, (which will become the rears when the mains are complete).

Man, what great, clear dialogue. Huge improvement over my Phase Tech MTM center I had. Plus the mid bass is nice and thick, but not too much.

And the baffle is a solid piece of 3/4 walnut... I think it actually measures closer to 7/8".

Definitely subscribed to this thread. This looks great, and should add well to the toolbox of available home theater speakers that we have here. Also looking forward to seeing your XL version come around Paul. I've been mulling a surround sound system for my living room, and was originally going to go with the OS MMTMM for C at meniscus and the MTM for L/R, and then put my original OS to the backs, but these new variants look like excellent candidates instead.

That Walnut really looks good - I think I need to pick some up for my next project. What's the front of the baffle made from? Is that bubinga; or perhaps sapele?

I originally designed these for my living room--to be used without a sub. Well, my living room is actually probably too big for this project (one of those "open floorplan" things). So I'm going to move up a step and do an "XL" version of this project, using some larger drivers.
The version Chris is doing here has the upper hand in a small or medium-sized room, though.

This is my favorite build going on right now. I have a small living room in the house, and on-wall speakers seem like what I need to do once I get the new flat panel up on the wall.
What is the F3 on the design? I like most media without a subwoofer....and being so near the wall- in my bass heavy room- I wonder if these would be enough for general listening....
