I really hesitate to post this next pic... but in giving back.... this is my feeble attempt to try to thwart hardwood splitting in the thinner areas around the tweeter, by gluing 1/4 BB to the rear.
I retrospect, I am sure this could have been done better, or maybe should not have been done at all. But there it is. It was a PITA to get around, and I misjudged the amount of material of the BB that would need to removed from either the hurricane nut channels, and the amount needed to be removed to allow the B3A to breath. Because if you cut the hole the exact right size, you cant fit a shirt button between the baffle and the magnet...it is TIGHT. So a serious chamfer is required.


I like the baffle edges to stand just a hair proud in relation to the sides, so I taped some thick strips of construction paper to the sides before flushing the baffle with the router. It caused the baffle to stand about 1 mm proud. The thickness of the paint will decrease that just a hair.... I think it will look nice.





Edges chamferred, and baffle mounting holes drilled.




These just might look nice after finishing!

OK, I confess to having made the same boneheaded mistake too.

My solution was to route a piece of MDF the correct size to fill the hole. Result, spindle hole perfectly centered and tight fit in existing hole.

On a different topic, Nice baffle! The SE's are going to look very nice. Bet they sound great too.

I run into this problem A LOT. What I do is use a piece of scrap hot melted to the back of the baffle, which then holds the center piece in place. The hot melt holds everything solid, but everything pops off with the tap of a hammer when I'm done.

I did have a setback of sorts. On the 2nd larger woofer rabbit, I made a mistake and cut it one size too small, and wouldn't you know, it was the only once I didn't verify the size on before cutting the hole.. you see where this is going...

At first, I thought using a drum sanding bit by hand would do it, but after about 45 mins of this, I realized two things, that walnut is freaking hard, (duh), and that the bit was not sanding the vertical plane of the rabbit at a 90 deg angle. So scratch that "ingenious" idea...

I sat there staring at it wondering how to secure the blank in there enough to hold the jasper jig, and to keep it from moving during cut, but to also not interfere with router during cut.

Ahah! Sand!

I must admit, I really thought I was being clever at this point, marveling at my ingenuity :rolleyes:
But, I didn't realize how much uplift the turbulent vortex of air that is generated by the router bit. It sucked that sand out of the channel quicker than you can say "ouch, I am getting sand blasted in my face!".

So then I realized that 1/4 collet router bits are sturdy and the perfect size to hold the blank.

Test fit with some old bits.



Here is setup right before routing. I suspended the board, and place router bits upside down.


Since I used a 1/4" spiral upcut bit to cut the hole, they were a perfect snug fit, and blank didn't move.

That deal is well beyond great. I paid $55 for a 9.5" wide 8 foot long piece and felt lucky. Nice job.
Looks like the build will be excellent whn completed.

I got a great deal on that too. 2 10' long boards, 12" wide for $25.

Looks great. I'm just about done collecting parts for the original ND variant of these. Paul was gracious enough to provide me the final XO for them. Where I'm stuck right now is if I'm going to go for on-wall sealed or let the ND105s breath in a tall, skinny tower.

This could be cool. Battle of the event horizons!

It's going to be a lovely speaker. I think they should be called Event Sensations. Still a fairly large enclosure even though it's going to be sealed.
