The Tantillus. My attempt at.... something.

I think since last Spring, I've been sitting on a pair of Peerless SDS 4" (830855) and a pair of Dayton ND20FB. I honestly don't recall if there was a selection criteria beyond their being cheap... and they sat... and sat... under my desk in the shadows of Paul's awesome OSMTMs. Reckon it's time to put them into something that resembles a project.

Thus, we have the "Tantillus". Approximately 6"W x 6"D x 10"T, these little cabs will net just shy of 200 cubic inches (3.3L). I don't know if I'll vent them yet; will eventually give them a listen and make some sort of decision on that.









I'm going to go into this without expectations; it will be the first time using PCD, SPL trace, True RTA and the like. If they wind up sounding like poo... well, I guess they'll sound like poo. I'm sure there's a forum somewhere out there where I can post up questions when I inexorably hit a roadblock. Perhaps when all is said and done, these won't turn out too awful bad.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. A break in the weather or Spring will find me on a table saw soon enough. Meh.

Yea.. I've been so busy at work the last 12 months, it's hard to do anything else except come home and collapse; went from posting to lurking. Too many projects that require my participation. Plus, I picked up my old firearm habit again back in the Spring. For a while, I didn't have anything; sold everything years ago in a divorce. I never had gone deer hunting, so in November I bagged my first. Got this guy and then a nice doe a few weeks later:


Anywho, things are gearing down a bit, and it seemed time to dig back in to this and see if I can learn something beyond copying other people's schtuff. :D

Is the port really going to be so close to the back of the mid? I don't think that'll turn out so well.

Mark already stated that he may or may not port it, but if he does, I'm sure that he's planning to put it above or below the mid (aintcha, Mark?;)), and it's going to look pretty damn spectacular.

The port will not be aligned with the back of the speaker, it will be above it.

D'oh, serves me right for not paying attention in my drafting classes.

I think if you rotate the mid 90 degrees you should be able to reduce the T-M distance.

CTC should be fine. Bottom of usable range for the tweeter is 3500, Fs 2000.
That would suggest maximum spacing of 3.87", and he should be a hair over 3.375 according to the drawing.
It looks really well proportioned as is. Rotating the driver will make it wider, maybe not look as good. IMO of course.

Lobing is an analogue function, not a digital one. The closer the drivers, the better (almost always, anyway).

You are correct about aesthetics also being a factor. With that edge radius he has going on there, the baffle would get wider with the rotation.

I think he planned it that way. I know that's how Pete S. gets around having to make a custom jig to flush mount those truncated Peerless drivers. All you have to do is make the baffle the same width as the truncated section and then make a normal circle with a circle jig.

These particular mids don't lend themselves to flush mounting; frames are stamped steel.
