I think it would be difficult to do something for only "several hundred dollars", particularly as you're considering an outdoor venue.

If I was looking at doing something like that, I'd buy second-hand tops like the modified Cerwin-Vega PSX-153s I rebuilt for my brother, and build two subs to augment the bass response. However that alone is going to cost several hundred dollars, and there's still the amps, cables, eq/xover, mixing board...

I wouldn't suggest getting the Behringer pro audio speaker mentioned earlier in this thread. I wouldn't consider that for music, unless we're talking about background music. They get loud yes, but sound like an AM radio IMO.

I didn't offer to DJ for him, I'm offering a basic PA for sale if he's interested, if not, no biggie. Just thought I would offer. I honestly wouldn't have time to help out, or feel confident enough to do a good job as a DJ for something as important as that.

I would build Darren K.'s PA system speakers in the PE showcase - can't recall their name off the top of my head. That's if you want to spend that kind of money before your wedding on speakers. +1 with others on the time requirement and not overestimating how much free time you will have.

Haha, no accordion or bagpipe, thank you. I have been to a billion weddings in the last two years, and thought all of the DJs basically sucked or at best were not worth the money. Those that DID the other stuff, did it terribly. I have a playlist, and will lock down the iPod and only give the keys to my sister. It isn't hard to setup a basic PA, I am just wondering if I can end up with something decent and permanent for close to the cost of the rental anyways (which is several hundred dollars).

Since you are the one getting married, my suggestion would be to hire a DJ. They will provide the equipment (speakers, stands, amps, microphones, etc.), music, set-up and tear-down. They coordinate with you on the music you want and handle the 'other stuff'. 'Other stuff' includes things like making announcements and handling requests from guests.

You will have enough to do, you don't want to unnecessarily add to your task list.

The Subs at Bill Fitzmaurice's site are a heck of a deal. Maybe a Table Tuba or AutoTuba with a $35 MCM 8" woofer.

I will be building a line array for a small church using these Aura Buyouts and Piezo tweeter array. $60 for a case of the woofers. BFUGLY but look good acoustically. You can always sell the final product to some frat house! :D

I've got some Carvin gear I might be willing to let go of if you're interested in buying rather than building or renting. I have a pair of 12" two ways with stands, an 18" powered sub, a 1000 watt power amp, and a small Behringer mixer as well as some other misc rack mount gear. It's from back in my band days, sadly that's a life I've had to leave behind.

I will say that the last wedding reception I attended was in a fairly large low ceilinged hall. The DJs had a modest JBL system, maybe two 12" two ways. Plenty of volume. No sub that I recall.

I know there is a live sound forum, but I thought I would start here, cause...you know...I am shy.
First off, I would rent. You will have more then enough to do in the next few months without adding this. Also, if you rent you can get exactly what you need, where if you build, there are always compromises, and that is not a day for compromises (insert joke of your choice here). Look for a system that is a simple as possible, that does the job, and avoid at all costs the dreaded 15" 2 way.
