Re: Build Thread: The Bombers (SR71's become 3-ways)
Don't know how I missed this build thread Lunch, but this is turning out amazing. I wish I had the cahones to take on a curved cabinet and a fresh design all in one.
Keep it up and can't wait to see them completed.Builds - C-Killa - Speedsters - LithMTM - Talking Sticks - Pocket Rockets - Khanspires - Dayton RS Center - RS225/28A - Kairos - Adelphos - SEOS TD12X - Dayton 8 - Needles - 871S - eD6c - Overnight Sensations - Tritrix (ported) - Lineup F4 - Stentorians - The Cheapies - Tub Thumpers - Barbells - Tuba HT - Numerous subwoofers - probably missing a few...... :pComment

Printouts spray-mounted to baffles, pilot hole drilled for jigsaw...
Jigsaw... so easy to cut through 1/2" plywood...
Dry fit... happy moment...

You could do this with 8.5x11 printouts patched together very easily.
Or just use a damn compass :rolleyes:Comment

Re: Build Thread: The Bombers (SR71's become 3-ways)
Big moment... time to glue the baffles to the bracing structure... first a nice generous bead of PL in the dado's of the baffle...
Then it was as easy as putting something heavy on the bracing structure to hold it down... this vice probably weighs 80-100 lbs, gotta friend to help lift it... easiest clamp-up ever, if you could call it that... the one clamp you see was just to pull the bracing structure over a hair to get it dead center... if you look closely you can see lines lining up...

Re: Build Thread: The Bombers (SR71's become 3-ways)
So before someone asks "what's with the little scraps glued around the edges of the braces"...
I had a bit of a screw up... when I printed out the shapes for the braces, the printer was set to "scale to print" instead of "100%"...
So the braces ended up 3/8" too short in both direction... so 3/16" strips have been added to compensate... not all strips are present yet.
A real PITA, but not a big deal... totally irrelevant once it's all glued up.Comment

Man, that's good stuff....I've admired your woodcraft since your TriTrix build, and you just keep on raising the bar!
Very very nice.

This is a lot of fun to watch, Lunch. Great job so far. Personally, I'd like to see a youtube video of you doing a knuckle-rap test on the completed cabinet. Imagine she will be dead as a doornail.Bryan K.

Re: Build Thread: The Bombers (SR71's become 3-ways)
This build is really a page out of Bill Fitzmaurices book. He firmly believes that thick heavy materials are not necessary provided the cabinet is well braced, which these certainly will be.
What's been really nice is how easy the 1/2" ply is to work with... jigsawig the baffle holes today, for instance, was so simple... probably less than half as much resistance as trying to jigsaw 3/4" mdf...
My only concern has been "is a 1/2" thick wall simply soundproof enough" such that sound doesn't simply transmit right through it... But the consensus seems to be that it's a non-issue... I'm certainly not the first to use this thinner material approach, should be ok.
What's been really wild is just how different this build has been, as it's literally an inside out build... interesting challenges and opportunities... for instance, gluing the baffle on was incredibly simple: just put a big heavy weight on it. Since the bracing structure is so incredibly stiff, that's all that's needed. It's been fun.Comment

Wow this build is fun...
This thing is so fricking solid and stiff... and LIGHT... that's the shocking thing.
