I think I've reserved enough posts. Any questions, or suggestions on changes that need to be made are welcome.

Can't imagine anyone not being able to get started with what you've posted.

You might want to go to the options and show folks what changes to the data plots can be had, like RAW, smoothing, etc.

I plan to cover those options. I'm going to add notes to screen shots to point out some of the buttons, etc.

                rpb,

This is a generous undertaking, perhaps I'll try to follow along. Just a mic and sound card?

on the gating part you should mention to uncheck measurement signal box. all the other buttons are pretty obvious as to what they do. Great start to a easy to use and read guide

Good catch, I'll edit the post. You need a mic preamp too.

You give me too much credit, I hadn't a clue. It's good to know though.

You new about needing a PC right? :D Just kidding around of course. Edited the first post.

                            Re: A HOLM starter guide

Need to add a quick discussion on (or link to) measurement tips and how they effect the measurements and subsequent use in PCD or other software.

I'm still learning but something like...

Show curves measured at high and low volume to illustrate background noise level in room. Is 20dB above background enough? Perhaps not. Do you need 80dB? I don't think so.

Wear ear muffs. You need them for woodworking anyway.

Locate driver mid-way between floor and ceiling to minimize floor/ceiling bounce. Locate away from boundaries to minimize early reflections. Illustrate with curves from good and bad examples?

How to measure low frequency....mic at driver? Ground plane? Need to splice into full-range measurements.

Use consistent amp level (and input recording levels) when measuring a driver set. Tips for getting same level from analog level control (use reference driver/distance and adjust to same measured output?). Don't forget to defeat tone controls, DSP, subwoofer, and other active speaker channels. Flat is where it is at.

Use consistent mic and driver locations to get repeatable measurements. Measure mic location (horizontal and vertical) and driver locations to get horizontal and vertical offsets for use in PCD.

I did suspect that, I just need to find one that works consistently. If I have a mic(Shure PG48) and external sound card(Creative X-Fi) that work well together, will a mic preamp still be necessary? Or, does it need to be an OmniMic or something similar and a mic preamp

Some mics may not need a preamp. I don't know for sure. Most will need one. If the mic works with the PC already, then you probably don't need to add one.

The tough thing to fix with soundcards is turning off ALL the special effects. I tried several cards that were unusable.
