Hey all you Iron Speaker fans! Let this be the official thread for the Iron Spseaker design competition! Please keep on topic, and use this to ask and/or clarify information and check this thread for updates as the competition grows near. There are a few other threads open for misc. discussion.
Date: 9/15/2012
Location: Roman’s (R-Carpenter) workshop in Brooklyn, NY
Time: Arrival between 10am-11am, start 11:30am SHARP!
Bring some community drinks and snacks, we usually all chip in for pizza as the day wears on. Adult beverages allowed and, heck, encouraged in a responsible manner.
Regulatory Timeline:
A PM MUST be sent to Mzisserson before 5/1/2012 to confirm entry. The window for entry will be closed after this time.
All designs must have one speaker shipped to Roman, arriving at least 2 weeks prior to the competition. The earlier, the better. The shipper pays shipping both ways and must provide a Fedex or UPS call tag for return shipping.
Official Rules:
1) The Peerless 830656 is the Iron Driver. It must be used as an active part of the speaker contributing to the sonic result.
2) All drivers must be purchased from Parts Express. Prices used to total up the competition will be PE’s “Catalog” prices regardless of what the driver was purchased for. No buyout drivers may be used as part of the competing system.
3) The total of drivers and crossover components cannot exceed $200.00 USD. Shipping does not count toward the price. Cabinet, accessories (including passive radiators) wiring, binding posts, and any other raw material do not count toward the $200.00 cost limit. Crossover components not purchased from PE must have a PE equivalent and PR pricing on that equivalent will be used.
a. Each Designer must provide a BOM and/or receipts with proof or purchase of the drivers. Please have this information organized and useable for timely review the day of the competition.
4) Speakers must fit safely on a pair of 24” stands with a 6”x6” top. Designers are allowed to create a larger base to sit on the 6”x6” top if needed. The stands are Target with dual poles, both filled with lead shot. They weigh about 65lb/ea.
5) Active speakers are allowed and must plugged directly into the source being self-contained. Amplification used must be PART of the speaker, and counts toward the $200 price cap.
6) Speakers must not be lower than a 4ohm nom. Min. They must provide connection for a single pair of bare-ended speaker wire. Any other wiring must be provided by the entrant.
Format:
All speakers will be hidden the day of the competition and assigned a number. People arriving with speakers in hand will be provided a cart with a cover over it. An organizer who is not participating on the judging will take the speaker and pair it with its mate. No one will be allowed to see, assist in setup, or handle any speaker before and during the judging portion of the event. If you show up, you’re a judge!
There will be a sheet of grill cloth in front of each speaker during playback to keep the judging blind. The organizers will exchange each speaker. Once set up, the speaker will be calibrated with pink noise at approximately 70-75dB from the same location to simulate moderate listening. Music is usually on average 10dB louder while playing back. 5, 1min. tracks (TBA) will be played to complete the subjective evaluation . Upon completion the “curtain will be dropped” to complete the aesthetic portion of the judging. Tally sheets will then be collected and Measurements will then be handed out to everyone for the design.
Once all judging is complete, each designer will be asked to reveal which speaker is theirs and give a brief presentation around the design. During this time, the winner will be tallied!
Measurements:
Impedance (Phase and Magnitude)
On Axis and Off Axis frequency response
Waterfalls at 1m
Distortion
Omni-polar designs will not be measured due to inherent limitations and methods required to retrieve accurate data. Other limitations due to special requirements may occur, however the measurements will be taken in standard formatting. That said, bonus points will be added for the best (easiest) load to drive for an amplifier as it is the only definitive measurement outside an anechoic chamber.
Judging:
Judging will be done by the collective of those who attend the event. Anyone who may be compromised such as organizers may participate, but will not be allowed to judge. The Score sheet will not be revealed until the day of the event, however it will be based heavily on the one used for DIY NY which is based off the Linkwitz form for subjective evaluation.
Tallying will be done by throwing out the highest and lowest score for each, then an averaging the total of the remaining sheets.
Prizes:
1) The Grand Prize is still TBA. The winning design will also be featured in a PR flyer showcase!
2) There will be door prizes in a raffle format for those who attend.
i. For those who attend and are competing, you will receive 10 tickets in the hat.
ii. Anyone who assist the set-up, or are involved with pulling this all together will get 5 tickets in the hat.
iii. Spectators will receive one ticket in the hat.
3) If you compete, and help, you only will receive the amount of tickets for competing. No double dippin’
Please feel free to PM me with any specific questions. Thanks to everyone who have helped hammer out the details and have worked hard to make this fair and fun for all who enter! A special thanks to PE for making this even possible!
There will be a post in this thread one week before with all those who have confirmed entry to make sure no one is missed.
