  • Re: Official Iron Speaker Thread

I'm the one who doesn't like it. However, I was able to make some decent speakers with it. For a low cost speaker design it's probably an OK driver choice. If you can wait for a juicy buyout to come along, you might get a better bang for your buck, but you may be waiting a while.

on a slightly off topic. should we put in a store bought pair of speakers. the ones below are consider to be the best under 100 dollar a pair speaker on the market. I don't own them and I have never heard them but if anyone has a pair I would be interested in comparing them to these diy iron speakers.

        Hey Phil,
I like the idea except it is missing a critical element: The Iron Driver! I am unsure what other's think, but my first reaction is not this time around because it is a little outside the scope of the competition key element being everyone using the 830656.

It was just a curiosity I have heard so much about them. Not knocking our diy efforts on low end builds (less then 200 a pair) just trying to get a line on what they sound like as compared to our builds.

Sometimes I have people that want an easy fast solution. I figured if some one had a pair and could drag them in I could get an idea of the sound quality they have.

Ie my house is full of speakers and computer gear my wife will kill me if I buy more. I was able to get her to go for the new Emotiva pre with a great persuading argument. lasting for 2 weeks.

            It's a bad idea.

Maybe for DIYNY? Think the format is better... After we go though we can play them at the end. I do agree these get A LOT of press and from what I have heard of them, only on a store shelf mind you, they are definitely better than average and for $100 it would be VERY hard to diy-em.

MAYBE waiting for the NYDIY is the better way. I do agree that waiting to the end of the show Is the way to go.

rpb I can see why you would think that. A lot of work can go into diy time effort can run into many hours.

I have spent more then 100 hours on a simple 2 way diy build so listening to these may be discouraging. Well one thing for sure they are not pretty even if they sound good.

I'm not entering the Iron Driver contest, so I have no ego to bruise. I just think it's a waste of time.

So It is official you are backing out then? You were in/out/in/out for quite some time.

Its not about bruised ego's, it is that they offer no other reference point than a good $100 speaker. Every speaker uses the same driver that had to be built around. Why would we compare them to a speaker that is not part of the scope?

Phil, bring them. If worse comes to it, we don't listen to them, if time allows, we can throw them in at the end, maybe even comparing to the winner. More of a bonus feature than a goal of the day.

Uh-oh, Brian and I might have screwed up, we may be outclassed here - I'm pretty sure we are leaving 6 or 7 dollars on the table! Oh well, so be it... I need a new abacus for figurin'.

After a weeks of frustration with SoundEasy, I got things measured and was up until 3am Friday night doing crossover design. Assembled Rev 1 with some spare parts, tested, swapped components around, did a some voicing the last two days.

I would love to add two notch filters, but alas, it is what it is. I managed to tweak things and priced it all out on my spreadsheet, constantly swapping components and redoing spreadsheet. I squeaked every bit out of the budget I possibly could.

$199.98 Not kidding. I rule :D Is there a prize for that? ;)
