    Re: Official Iron Speaker Thread

I don't think Mike is taking the fun out of anything....he is correct... It is a DESIGN competition and that accounts for fit and finish as they say. By saying Mike is forcing to you make it estheticly pleasing is the same as saying he is forcing you to make it sound good. No one is forced to do anything. For some people making it sound good is the easy part and for others making it look good is the easy part...

Mike will lay down the ground rules and those who want to participate should pony up the best and not skimp on part of the design.. it absolutely should have a craftsmanship component to the judging. It is not a sound competition....It is a design competition and that is part of it...

Thanks Mark The rules were a summation of many members input, I am just the "face", the body really has been those participating and other DIY-ers. ROman and I then balance it all to make it enjoyable and fair for everyone.

This is for fun, to give a reason to DIY, maybe learn something and challenge those who wish to enter, and those participating know that. It's going to be a blast! :D

Oh, I thought speakers were DESIGNED for sound, not as room decorations. My mistake.

I just skimmed all the iron driver threads. The first two mentions I could find of scoring for aesthetics was a one liner in post #1 of this thread, and a question in post #49 yesterday. I didn't see any discussion, or input from any members, much less "many members", about scoring aesthetics. I was aware that a speaker that looked like something from a sci-fi movie, or had ugly proportions might loose a few points, but never saw any post that indicated that the quality of woodwork, or paint finish was part of the scoring, until now.

rbp, you already got your answer. Primarily, the designs will be judged based on subjective perception by listeners. Listening session will be as blind as we can make it. The objective measured data will be revealed for each loudspeaker later on with additional points for amp friendly impedance.
A few more points will be given out for well made speakers (which I described earlier). And no, I am not going to give myself load of points for woodwork, for two reasons tho. One is that I own a woodworking shop with 50k in tools. Second reason would be is that, I've seen loudspeakers on previous NY DIY events that are just as good or better made AND finished as I could do with all my tools.

That's correct. We design plant stands that look nice, and then throw drivers randomly in and call them loudspeakers.

There will be a sheet of grill cloth in front of each speaker during playback to keep the judging blind. The organizers will exchange each speaker. Once set up, the speaker will be calibrated with pink noise at approximately 70-75dB from the same location to simulate moderate listening. Music is usually on average 10dB louder while playing back. 5, 1min. tracks (TBA) will be played to complete the subjective evaluation . Upon completion the “curtain will be dropped” to complete the aesthetic portion of the judging. Tally sheets will then be collected and Measurements will then be handed out to everyone for the design.

Once all judging is complete, each designer will be asked to reveal which speaker is theirs and give a brief presentation around the design. During this time, the winner will be tallied!

                                Measurements:

                                Impedance (Phase and Magnitude)
On Axis and Off Axis frequency response
                                Waterfalls at 1m
                                Distortion

Omni-polar designs will not be measured due to inherent limitations and methods required to retrieve accurate data. Other limitations due to special requirements may occur, however the measurements will be taken in standard formatting. That said, bonus points will be added for the best (easiest) load to drive for an amplifier as it is the only definitive measurement outside an anechoic chamber.

Which measurements are part of the scoring, if any? Is it just a few points that will be given to the one entry having the easiest to drive impedance, or does the scoring go beyond that? Why are you planning to hand out measurements after each demo? Are the designs going to be revealed right after the demo, and scored for aesthetics right then, or after all designs have been heard?
