  • Help me blow my amp!

Oh wait no. I mean please help me NOT blow my amp.
I picked up a couple of the RS722 kits PE is selling. Then I realized just after I ordered them that I have an 8ohm rated amp and they are 4ohm MTMs. Ack. Total bonehead mistake. I think.

I have a Pioneer VSX-820-K and it does ok at 8 and supposedly 6 ohms. A while back I had a lose wire issue and all it did was shut off with a click. That is what would happen if I over drew the amps on it right? And if that happend I could pick up a two channel amp that was 4 ohm rated and supliment... right? I don't know. I am considering sending the kits back (have not built them yet) and finding a good plan for RS180-4s in series as an MTM.

I am hopeing for some more educated opinions on the matter. Any takers? Thanks.

Possibly; Protection schemes often are current based, so a dead short triggers it.
I F the 4 ohm load triggers, there is always the option of using devices like an autotransformer.

LOL. Or just buy a better receiver or integrated amp for 100$ off ebay.

        You're kidding, right?

An autotransformer would present a terrible interface for an audio signal introducing lots of distortion.

I'd go ahead and use them with the receiver as is. Most likely, it will play just fine as long as you don't try to turn it up too loud and cause the output limiter to trip.

Besides, any receiver that can't handle 4 Ohms deserves to die.

Yeah LOL! The first word was IF
I've had Pioneers receivers ( circa 70's ) that had no issues w a single set of 4 ohm nominal MTM.
When multiple MTM/room capacity was required - a different story and solution.

And no I don't kid with Pete, nor argue based upon referential experiences.

              Nice :D

I am planning on replacing the RC, with an MT design so I can just use the 8 ohm RS180s there. Not yet sure what my plan for the CC is. One thing at a time. Next up is a new sub anyway.

Yeah, I think I will just build them and go with it. Thanks for the input!

If you dont crank it, it wont be a problem.

The cheapest way to current protect a circuit is a 12 volt lamp.
