3M Undercoat Used By WWWJD?

I really like the look of these speakers and wanted to use the same 3M undercoat that WWWJD used on the baffles. I PMed him some time back with no response, he's probably been busy I'd guess. Anyone know what exact product he used or his email address?

Seems like undercoating would be overkill. Unless you need the mass for deadening the panel? Thicker panel instead? I know the stuff I've used under a car stinks like hell for weeks and some of it stays soft. Maybe the 3M is different. I don't know that product. If it's purely asthetics I would just go with a flat textured or wrinkle paint.

I saw those also and went with the 3m 8881. Turned out pretty good considering the weather wasn't playing nice. I made mistakes because of my inpatients and had to take it back down to wood on the first run. It also takes time for the undercoat odor to go away.

I just got a gallon of DuraTex, unfortunately have not had a chance to use it yet, but I will be doing so very soon. My thought was to use it for baffles and portable speakers. I have no pro stuff, so I won't be using it for its intended application. From the research I have done, this appears to be some pretty decent stuff.....not smelly or a PITA to work with either.

Duratex is as close to simple and bullet proof as you can get. I use the cheap white foam rollers, but you can use any roller you want and get more or less texture. I left a Duratexted MDF scrap out in the sun, took over a year to delaminate. It can be sprayed with a texture gun for drywall.

Thanks for all the comments, however I just want to spray it from a can and I really like exactly how WWWJD's work came out with the 3M spray. I'm just doing baffles so it doesn't have to be extra rugged or anything. He tried a few different things and I'd like to avoid the trial an error and just use exactly what he used. We have an excellent automotive paint supply store nearby, I might just print out the picture and ask them.

Also wondering if it can go right over the edge grain on MDF since it is textured.

I'd look at either plasti-dip spray (available at home depot), or duplicolor bumper coating or spray in bedliner

Here is a comparison of truck bed liners, etc. and he does seem to prefer the Duplicolor products. The black truck bed liner is not that deep of a black and he then paints over it which is something I might want to do:

The 3M product is undercoat not truck bed liner and comes in low VOC (8881), and paintable (8882). I might just try the paintable and then see how it looks with a deeper black over it.

Just a quick observation from an ex auto body painter's POV...3M makes fantastic products. However, the Undercoat, is just that, undercoating...it is thermoplastic, designed to stay sticky, and is vulnerable to heat. Not something I would use for in my house. Go with the spray on truck liner...same look, hard as a rock...paint it if you like.

Thanks for commenting, your points are why I asked it just didn't seem right to use undercoat. Do you think the formulations have changed so that they fully dry these days, for lower VOC and all that?

Do you think he was thinking truck liner when he said undercoat? 3M has an undercoat product that can be painted and I just bought that one to try but I'd rather rule it out and not waste the time if it is not the right thing. The pro auto paint shop that I went to had the 8882, and 8883 and the regular auto parts store had other 3M undercoat products .... so many to choose from.

I used the unpaintable 8881. It stinks for a while and takes a long time to completely dry. I would assume that the undercoat that you can paint would dry or it wouldn't work very well.
