  • Lepai volume problems

I am definitely not a tech savy person, but I purchased a turntable, speakers, and the Lepai LP-2020 amplifier. I have attached everything, but the volume from the Lepai does not go very high. On it's highest setting it would not be heard from the next room, for example. Is there anything I can try? Do you think it is a defective unit?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

How ( specifically ) is it all attached.
I suspect that the turntable is NOT connected first to a phono pre-amp? *

What kind of cartridge do you have on your turntable, i.e. make and model?

The Lepai requires something called "line-level" input, which does not come from your turntable directly. You need a phono pre-amplifier in between, but there are different types depending on your cartridge: Moving Magnet or Moving Coil, or some with both.

You likely need a phone preamp... magnetic cartridge turntables do not output line level signal so you need a preamp to bring it up to where your amplifier sees enough signal to reach full gain. Just go to the PE store page and search for "phono preamp".

Also try an IPOD or similar into it and you should get a significant increase in output, then you will know for sure you just need a phono preamp.

          a low cost model preamp

          another low cost model

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...umber=248-6348 this is the same as the one from mcm

          a better model = http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=245-876

these are 18 to 50 bucks you can go for 10's of thousands but any of the above should work

If your turntable doesn't have a preamp, I'm surprised it plays at all. I found that running my 2020 with an MP3 player to test speakers I had to turn the MP3 player volume way up to get full power out of the 2020. The level I normally use with earbuds was not enough. So it definitely needs pretty high level line inputs to drive it.
