  • Midwest DIY (static) Web Site??

I'm going to toss this out. I have spoken to a few people via PM and otherwise behind the scenes and it seems like something that COULD work.

I'm willing to pay for the domain (TBD) and for the initial web hosting to ensure that it's a web site that can actually be hit by multiple users at the same time without bogging down to nothingness....like PETT used to do...LOL.....

This WILL NOT be just an informational site...it would be interactive to some extent, (like uploading pics and whatnot), otherwise I have no real interest in it. It must be something very functional and timely and maintained. There are so many superb designers who have their own sites, and of course there would be links to all those great sites. However, I think it would be nice to gather all the midwest coolness and localize it in one site and also provide a single point of information for all midwest gatherings, etc. ....something that would also be updated in a timely fashion so that others outside of PETT would also be clued in on a real time basis. Forgive me, but I am NOT a big forum guy....I only contribute to PETT. After doing the video conferencing at InDIYana 2012 I understand that our DIY "virtual" reach is broad and real.

Trust me when I say that there is NOTHING in this for me. It will be a capital outlay for me and the only reason I am even contemplating doing this is that I feel it would be my way of paying forward for all the awesome knowledge I have gained from my interaction here on PETT. Oh...just in case you were wondering, this site will NOT have a forum or compete in any way with any of the great forums out there. It will be more of a focal point for everything Speaker DIY for the midwest. Does that make sense? Am I crazy?

My son is Graduating from DePaul University next month. He did the Chicago 2011 DIY web site..... I'm no genius, but I did pay for his tuition...payback time? Me thinks so.

    What do you say?

Bryan, I'm the former secretary of the CT. Audio Society. We have two sites. A public and a private one. The public one www.ctaudio.org
is a Google based design that's easy to set up and offers visitors interested in the CAS to get some information about who we are along with upcoming and past meeting events and, see a slide show.

The private site is free (Yahoo groups) with access to CAS members only. It is our private forum to chat, share pics, store our archive e-files and make announcements. There are hundreds of Yahoo groups sites. Access usually requires permission from a 'gatekeeper', but needn't be 'private'.

Some ideas to consider for your Midwest group.

BTW, your son seems to be following in my son's footsteps. He graduated in '95 with a BFA and set up the CAS's first web site that helped save what was a group in decline at the time.
Live in Southern N.E.? check out the CT Audio Society web site.

<Sigh> I'm so bummed I don't live in WI anymore... I miss the DIY population density in the Midwest.

It sounds like an ambitious undertaking, and I'm sure I'd help eat up some bandwidth... as long as "outsiders" are still permitted to participate :D

I am very enthusiastic for such a site. Please make a method for donation that you can toggle on and off so as not to set you in debt my lord.

LOL...not really, considering how old this initial post is. However, this has been on my mind for some time and I needed a partner, some resources and a couple kicks in the gluteal area to get the foundation laid out.

A preliminary site is almost done as we speak....very close....very excited for the future and happy to partake in this role as a way to contribute to the growth of the community.

I think it is a great idea. It would be cool to see what people in our area are doing. I am downstate from you! It would be also interesting to see if there are any others in my area who enjoy this hobby.

                      OK guys, here it is.

JR and I will be jointly running the site and the social media pages. For now it's very bland, but we've got some interesting stuff lined up going forward. You can link to our facebook page and twitter from the site. If you're a facebook user, give us some likes!!

Feel free to send suggestions for improvement. This is meant to complement our community so input is appreciated.

                      Thanks!! :D

Perhaps some catigories. I have a just finished preamp designed by Craig Salin I would like to share as well as a class D amp that should be finished next weekend.

We have a "spotlight" category where we will showcase drivers, designers, and projects. We can talk about your projects next week. Personally, I'd love to showcase the preamp (as a project) and also Craig (as a designer) at some point. Thanks for stepping up Lowell.

Bryan, you have InDIYana and Dakota events listed, how about AXPONA? Not a true DIY event, but still a Midwest event that diyers plan to attend.

I DID think of mentioning Axpona but decided against it because of its commercial nature. You raise a good point that the show is indeed frequented by a lot of DIY guys. I have sort of a compromise though so I will put up a small blurb about it. Thanks.
