  • What is the tweeter with the best dispersion at 90°?

Let's say.. if you wanted to build a speaker with a tweeter firing straight up, with no diffusors on top, which one would you use?

I'd use the Seas DXT, but I'm wondering if a smaller unit (3/4", 1/2") would do a better job.
    Line Array: IDS-25 Clone, FE-83.
    2-2.5 Way:
    Zaph Audio's winning entry: ZA5+SB29. - Microliths: RS125+RS28. - Small Bangs: TB W4-1658SB+SEAS 27TBFC/G. - Monoliths: Peerless 830884+SEAS 27TBFC/G.
    3-3.5 Way:Miniliths: SEAS P21/CA21REX+Neo8 PDR+Neo3 PDR. - Megaliths: 2xDayton RS270+2xT-B W4-1337SB+SB29. - ZDT3.5 +: 2xDayton RS180+Dayton RS52+Vifa DQ25. Reflexos: OB 4xDayton RS150 + Neo3 PDR.

honestly, if you can find some in good condition, the 3/4" AR2ax or AR3a tweet...or the tweeter Roy Allison designed for the Allison speakers of the late 70's

As far as omni goes, what I would do is do bipole HiVi RT1.3 rather than an upfiring tweeter.

I don't know. Wouldn't an omni to dipole transition at 1.x KHz cause havoc on power and frequency response? That's my main worry.

How about the inverted dome tweeter used in EPI/Genesis/Human.

Recently I refoamed a pair of Genesis 22s and a pair of Genesis 210s. The 1-inch inverted dome is used in both models. The highs sound very transparent, lively and musical(to me at least).
Mark K tested a later version of the tweeter made by Human Speakers. It looks at 10 k Hz the change in spl for this tweeter is just a couple of db from zero to 45 degrees.

Can that even be run as a dipole? or do you mean a pair in bipolar operation back to back? They are very thin!

The Hiquphon OW1 has very good dispersion out wide. When I had a pair, they were by far the most touchy speakers I had with respect to placement too close to side walls.
Keep an open mind, but don't let your brain fall out.

The one on the right is an interesting tweeter. It is made with Sony headphone elements that are 8mm in diameter, so the response is non-directional. We quickly measured it and saw useable response down to 5K, so it actually works. The one on the left is the magnet structure for a cylindrical Heil. Maybe someday I'll finish it off.
