  • Sjofn hifi's "The Clue" speaker

Anybody heard, heard of, or seen these?
They are getting a lot of buzz on the net. They are made in the Pacific NW and retaill for about $1K.
Haven't seen any measurements yet or xo details.

They seem to be similar to some VG DIY projects seen here.

Re: Sjofn hifi's "The Clue" speaker

Their recommendation to place the back of the speaker close (~ 2 inches) from a rear wall suggests to me that they are trying to use the wall as a 2pi space to minimize BS and relying on the tweeter's waveguide to provide a good soundstage to compensate for the speaker not being placed further out into the room as most of this ilk are.

      Thoughts?

It says you can hear these in Lexington KY and Louisville too, but doesn't mention where.... I don't know of any hi fi shops in Lex these days, if I could find them I'd go give a listen, I haven't listened to any commercial offerings in a while.

There's a thread on a swedish forum about these speakers and speaker design. It's oc in swedish but a few post down in the thread the designer of the speaker enters the discussion and that is held mostly in english.
The designer calls himself "jacro" on the forum.

Oh, and Sjöfn I guess would be pronounced something like "Sjoefen". :D

              Great sleuthing jonasz!

As I speculated, the recommended positioning close to rear wall is intended to provide bass enhancement. The spec sheet also notes 1st order slopes. Jeez my "Intimates" seem very similar but I'm sure lack a bit for not having a WG tweeter.
James Croft, the developer of the Clue speaker admitted the cabs are made by the same chinese co. that make the PE cabs.
I'll be hearing a pair of Clues this weekend at our CAS mini-monitor shootout. Will report how they fare.

Re: Sjofn hifi's "The Clue" speaker

Woofer (with a proprietary 4 hole mounting frame):
Scanspeak Discovery 18W/4434G-00, 7" Midwoofer, 4 ohms. Aluminum Chassis, Fiber Glass cone, NR rubber surround, Vented below spider. The GF series is designed for the discerning audiophile customer. To meet the needs of this audience, several new technologies were developed with the goal of lowering distortion and damping in the speaker. The coated fiberglass cone reduces vibration and standing waves, and the vented motor system minimizes power compression. The combined result is a very open and dynamic sound.

The tweeter- I've not seen a waveguide like that. The fact that they say Vifa is in Denmark means he's not up on the lingo since they
now hail from China. Could be the BC25 for all I know.... The fact that the waveguide is small means it could be one of the smaller
                  Vifa Neo tweeters.

                  That's all I got!

                    eh.

An awful lot of hard selling it here.

I would have to hear them to make sure they are not a flavor of the week. It says silk dustcap on the woofer? Are those PE .025ft3 pre-fab cabs? The tweeter looks a lot like the audax horn-loaded one. Comes with a small WG faceplate. I never believe good or bad until I hear things anymore, I have been shocked too many times by how awful, or good something can be to spite the looks/drivers involved.
