  • CNC baffle cutting service

Ok, it's time to make it official. I'm going to be offering CNC cutting services to the forum. I am able to do

the cutouts and recesses on premade baffles or make custom baffles and cabinets as well.

**I DO also have the capability to model and cut in 3d, ie: built-in waveguides from

your dimensions, out of real wood or MDF, even stand alone waveguides (out of real wood only)**

You can email me at woodgrafx AT maine DOT rr DOT com (*replace the AT and DOT with the proper punctuation) or PM

me for a quote. I check both at least a few times a day. I will need the dimensions, material, any bracing and the drivers, etc. you want to use in order

to give you a proper quote. If you ask how much a small MTM is going to be I really won't be able to give you an

answer. If you need them completely assembled/finished or chamfers/roundovers etc., be sure to let me know so I can include

    that in the quote.

I'll require a minimum 50% deposit to start the job and the balance, including shipping costs, will be due when

it's ready to ship. Shipping quotes will be an estimate, unless stated in the quote. Only when the project is finished will I

be able to give an exact amount.

MDF, maple and birch ply are readily available but I also have access to quite a few other species of hard wood.

Curly and straight maple, walnut, paduk, bubinga, mahonany are some good examples of nice tight grained hard woods. So if

you're interested in something out of the ordinary there's a good chance I can get it. Some of it can be pricey

and more costly to machine but it never hurts to ask.

    What have you got?!

    Thanks!

This is great, especially that you're doing this in Maine, good luck with it.

Given you can do your own modelling, you probably wouldn't want the tool paths or geometry I've used, but if you do, by all means let me know and I'll send these along to you.

Thanks. I see you're fellow Mainer. I didn't notice that until now. That would be great if you could send me what you have been working on. I've been trying to get some other formulas I found on the net to work but too much missing info. I have been playing around trial n error and came up with one really good eliptical guide (and a lot of scrap wood) I plan on testing in an MTM after I finish upgrading the Tikkis. I'd be happy to share that in return. Maybe you can figure out why it works so well. lol

Im definitely interested. I could provide models and tool path as well however feeds speeds and depth of cuts for wood are not my specialty. Titanium yes... wood no.
Look for my email and thanks for bringing this to the light.

I'll send the files for the various guides I've milled, there are two or three elliptical guides, a few round guides and two double guides. Some of these have been tested and results posted. I'll need an email address for the files.

Is there a file format you prefer for the solid models? I think you can post the tool paths for your machine using the tool paths I'll send, if not, I may have the post for your machine and will send you the posted files.

I would not be the person to figure out why your guide works well, I don't really have sufficient background to understand as well as I would like why some of the guides I've sent off have produced results that were well regarded. I've just started testing drivers and guides, so my ability to explain is very limited.

I recently posted results for the double guide I wrote about a few months ago, perhaps these will interest you, they are in the Tweeter/Midrange thread.

TN Allen - you can send them to the woodgrafx email above. Can you send them in .dxf or .stl? What program did you use to create them? I use Aspire 3.5. I have been following your thread on the mid/tweet guides and I posted a reply a time or 2.

Sonic Temple - I'll be watching for your email. If you can just provide any models and/or dimensions it would be easier if I integrate the toolpaths on my end.

              TJ,

Do you have a file of the waveguide profile used in Pete Schumpeter's RS-28 projects?

              I'd be interested in a baffle for PE's .75 pre-fab enclosure w/ the WG and cutout for a RS225.

              Can you get 1" MDF?
              Thanks,
              Aaron

                  Re: CNC baffle cutting service

I curious on how you deal with the internal stesses in the hardwood that cause warping and bowing when cutting 3D baffles? (like waveguides). As you remove material from one side of the panel it will alter the balance of internal stresses in the wood and cause distortion.

                  Thanks,
                  Shawn

                    Re: CNC baffle cutting service

Good question. I'm no expert these are just my experiences.

Honestly I haven't really had an issue with it yet. I've cut 100's of 3d carvings and signs where you remove a lot more area than a waveguide. I typically clear coat them right away too. That stabilizes and protects the wood from humidity changes which I think would be a bigger problem. I actually have one in maple that I cut months ago and still haven't clear coated with no signs of stress or warping. When making waveguides I've always used at least 2 peices glued together to get the right thickness so that could contribute to the lack of issues too. How do the big companies produce those nice BIG horns without any problems? FWIW Most of what I've done has been with maple and walnut. I did a couple MDF ones in the same manner with no problems either.

I did have an issue once with "poplar" (the kind you get at lowes) and one other time was when the material left was less then 0.100" thick and over a very large area (>80%). I think that was "poplar" too now that I'm thinking back. It was a carving of a chinese dragon with a "frame" around it. All one peice! If I have a warped board, before cutting, I will wipe it with a wet sponge on the cupped side, throroughly and evenly but not soaked, then let it sit for a couple hours. Repeat this until the board is no longer warped. If I go too far I'll wet the other side and reapeat again until flat. Then I'll cut it stain and clear coat.

I wish you were on the west coast. It will probably cost too much to ship big speaker cutouts here.

Arlis: I can cut it, it's a matter of the file format. I can import raw toolpaths and use them in a model also. I could also model it if you have the dimensions. What do you have? If you send me the file I'm sure we can get you what you want. With Pete's blessings of course. My email is in the OP.
