    Project Attention Deficit Disorder

I'm right smack in the middle of building a pair of Wolf's Stances and I already have my attention shifted to my next tube amp project. Is it just me? Is it wrong? :D

Not that it will cause me to do "rush job" on the Stances or worse yet never finish them... but I'm just constantly thinking about the amp project (component layout, case finishes, etc.) I think my wife truly believes I'm a bit crazy

Oh my god no, it's not just you. I get bored with stuff half way through and sometimes never come back to it. This happens all the time, even if I don't have some shiny new project in mind.

I have to do things that way, I always have two - five projects in various stages of completion. If I did not, I would finish one and spend six months debating what to do next and never get anything done.

This is why I will all of a sudden hammer out two or three projects in a month.

Now where did I put that Adderal..?
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Or sometimes get back to it as much as years later . . .

I'm trying to learn LIMP and ARTA. I feel a little PADD trying to absorb the info. I can't get my computer to cooperate to give me a good impedance graph, so I'm really bouncing around.
BTW, what tube amp project are you working on?

I currently have all the of the drivers, XO parts, and cabinets cut for a pair of Usher 2-ways and Continuums.

The XO's are assembled for the Continuums and the cabs are glued, just need to drill holes, finish, and assemble.

The cabinets are done for the Ushers, just need to assemble the XO and put them together.

Literally could finish everything in 4 hours of hard work, but it's been sitting around for over a year.

I guess I'm in the right place,it took me two years to get the 4 Pi speakers built after getting the plans...
Getting married 1 1/2 yrs ago slowed things down a bit, though.Built a plinth for my Lenco TT several yrs ago, still haven't finished it,then there's the boombox project,Karlson cabinets, turning another horn extension for my mid-bass horns, finalizing the crossovers, want to make some line arrays, working on an omni-directional speaker(s),learning Hornresponse,Omnimic,DATS,repairing several tube amps, organizing my workshop(garage)so I have a chance of finding things when I need them, and still get the wife's car in there this winter.Several years ago it took me 20 minutes to find my air compressor,so I decided it was time to clean the place up.Still isn't finished...

The list goes on and on,but I'm getting depressed thinking about it....

Mike, I need a small 6-8 wpc amp for my desk at work. I know there are lots of chip amps and class D stuff that I could build cheaper and would have much more power and better measurement specs... but there is more of a neat/cool factor with tubes. Right now I am looking at buying a S-5 kit from Tubedepot, the K12G. It seems to get good reviews and there are lots of upgrades and mods the guys at diyaudio are doing. It won't be a "reference" amp but it will make nice back ground music in my little 11' x 13' office. Plus I get the pleasure of building my flavor case for it.

OMG! And I thought I was just one of a few!

Seeing so many responses describing exactly how things go in my household, I am starting to wonder if this an inherent trait in the DIY speaker builder.

No, it's not just you and it's not just speaker builders either, it's human weakness. We are all easily bored, and constantly infatuated with new, shiny things. Intense ambition is a mental disorder IMO, we are the normal ones. (It's almost too easy to justify.)

I thought so too at one time, so I bought a cool little Glow Amp 1. Bought a few NOS Russian tubes for rolling as well. I listened to it once or twice.

And then I got bored and put it in the closet, took a nap, and a few weeks later started looking at SS amps, not because I needed one but because it was shiny and new.

I never think about a "next" project while I'm working on a current project, probably because I often am modeling TLs for others. But I often start thinking about a new project almost before the "paint is barely dry" on my current project. The biggest problem I have, and this is becoming a larger issue, is not being able to "draw a line in the sand" in the design process and start making sawdust. I seem to keeping thinking of possible changes to make it a bit better. Many ideas don't pan out, or even if they do, their audible benefits will be questionable.
