  • Classix II Build (Thanks takitaj!)

My son Josh and myself have just started a Classix II build. I would like to thank takitaj for doing such a great job in creating the flat packs for us. I think he did a great job with them.

Below is a pic of the baffle.

Josh prepped the cabinets and we put one of them together tonight. I will post more pics of the cabinet once the glue dries.

No it is 3/4" void-less oak plywood. I have always liked oak... ;)

          Looking good so far

That is 3/4" oak plywood from Lowes. (yup, Lowes ) Almost no voids at all. It was a bit "splintery" though, due to the nature of the species I think but, attention to the saw direction gave a perfectly clean, sharp edge on the outsides. Then edge strips were applied to hide the layers.

We also made some minor changes to the original design. The driver layout was adjusted very slightly to give a little more meat between the top and bottom edges & the rebates. Then a brace was added behind the woofers.

My son was so excited about building the first cabinet he got up early today to build the second one. So now both of them are built minus the front baffles so we we can install the XO's easy. We should get the rest of the parts today and hopefully have the XO's built tonight. Once we do that we will install the baffles and stain the cabinets the next day.

If everything keeps rolling along we may be listening to our new Classix II's all weekend!

Well we got the speakers built! I would like to give a special thanks to Leroy R for coming over to my house to help me with the crossovers. Without Lee's help we would had struggled for quite a while I am sure. Below are some pics of the assembled speakers and one shot with the satellites I was running in comparison.

I have not stained them yet, they are just bare wood at the moment.

              Listening Impressions:

When I first plugged them in I thought they sounded a bit tinny. I started by playing some Joe Satriani Chrystal Planet Live 2001 and thought it was lacking. I kept playing songs and played with the EQ and then decided to play some songs with some bass. The more I played songs with bass the better and better the speakers sounded as they broke in. We watched some Netflix and now are watching Terminator 2. As we keep playing sound through them they keep improving. I cant wait to hear what they sound like in a week when they most likely will be fully broken in.

One thing that is really nice in the bass response. I reconfigured my AVR and set them up as big speakers and we now have much more bass. Once I replace the subwoofer we should be sitting pretty as far as bass goes.

Thanks again to Leroy R for all his help. And thank you Mr. Carmody for designing such great speakers!

Glad you were able to make it over today. Wish we'd had time to get yours hooked back up for some more listening before you had to leave. They sounded great after we figured out the little wiring glitch.

Re: Classix II Build (Thanks takitaj!)

Well now they sound great. The sound fills the whole living room and I can turn it up loud enough that even my head banging brother in-law was like OMG dude! Even at higher volume they sound fantastic. I am particularly impressed with the mids and highs. I started playing dark side of the moon and when the ticking and alarms are going off they are very clear. I now know what is meant by the sound not being fatiguing. Even at higher volumes your ears don't hurt and nothing sounds distorted. I can turn my sub off completely and they still sound awesome.

We played the movie Predators last night and were blown away by the sound. Even dialog was cleaner and better!

Thank you once again mister Carmody, but a very special thanks goes to Leroy R for all your help. Now we can listen to some really righteous sounding speaks!

                      YOU GUYS ROCK!

I just wanted to post a couple of pics of the finished speakers. My son wanted to go with a ebony stain and I think they turned out fairly well. As I write this I am listening to them. I am still amazed by the quality sound they produce and cannot wait until the next speaker build.
