  • DATS Users - Announcing a software upgrade to v 1.0.2

    Hello DATS users,

This is to announce that DATS version 1.0.2 software has been released. The new version is a free upgrade for all DATS users and enables the signal generator's white noise function which I inadvertantly left disabled in the original release. The new version also provides improvements in oscilloscope triggering and sweeping.

Here is the link where you can download a patch to upgrade to v 1.0.2

    Cheers!

What about some kind of tutorial for us dummies so we can have fun with the 'scope?

Maybe it is in the manual, but I will ask out of sheer laziness - can DATS be used to measure the frequency response of an amplifier? Might be useful in that regards what with all the questions about subwoofer plate amp responses floating around.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

The DATS device is a one port device. Unless the software will use one of your sound card ports as a source port, you could only measure a pseudo - S22 of the amp.

You're probably better off using HOLM sweeps and calibrating the cables out, and make a very Real test load.

This should be done such that the test load is R + jX ohms (intended nominal speaker load, ideal is X=0) But forms a voltage divider. ie your sound card input is say 2.5Vrms, if you're driving the load from the sub amp with 20Vrms, make a 1:10 voltage divider and your sample is 2.0Vrms.

          John,

I have DATS, but it is the following: Version 0.9.0.1 (beta1). How do I upgrade?

Dan, Tried to send you a PM, but your box was full. If John doesn't have it readily available I can send it to you. Just drop me an email and I'll send it back your way.

              Dan,

Let me know if you don't receive an email from me. Some email fllters don't like .exe files.

Does this work for the WT3? Or is the hardware different?
You go your way, I'll go mine. I don't care if we get there on time.

Great news, John. I'll download this evening.
Does the scope now allow for triggering / monitoring on a source other than the "reference source" (DATS signal generator)? It would be very useful to be able to trigger on the sound card/amp, and the microphone at the same time!

                    Hi Chris,

When using the DATS hardware the oscilloscope function primarily serves to monitor the impedance measurement signals before and after the current sensing resistor. But if you use pretty much any other standard audio interface the DATS generator output appears at the interfaces line outputs and the line or mic input appears as the scope input. This lets you use DATS as a more general purpose signal generator and oscilloscope.

Try this for example. Most notebook PCs have a built-in mic which you can select at the DATS Audio Device Selection dialog (see the Edit menu). With the mic input selected run the generator and scope and you should be able to see what the mic is picking up on the scope...try speaking or whistling and see what the waveform looks like. Stop the generator/scope to freeze the waveform and zoom in or out using the ms/Div setting. Try scrolling through the waveform using Alt+ left/right cursor arrows.

You could actually adapt a standard BNC scope probe so as to connect it to the line in of your sound system. Then you could probe any signal within the input range of the sound system (usually a\up to about 1Vrms). You can get the system to safely handle larger input signals (think power amp output) by configuring an appropriate attenuator at the line input. A 30.6 dB attenuator can be made using one 1k and one 33k Ohm resistor. Connect both resistors in series and then connect the free end of the 1k resistor to ground. Next connect the free end of the 33k resistor as the attenuator input and take the output signal from the point where the two resistors connect together. This gives you 1 volt of output for 34 volts of input signal which works out to be an attenuation of 30.63 dB.

                    Regards,
                    John

                      Hi Johnny,

No, DATS cannot measure frequency response. Perhaps in a future version...

                        Hi Dan,

Version 0.9.0.1 was a beta release and I thought the beta testers had all been upgraded to first public release version 1.0.1. If you would write me at "john dot murphy" at "trueaudio dot com" I'll send you a link to download 1.0.1. Then you can apply the upgrade patch to go to 1.0.2. Then you will be all set for any future upgrades.

                        Regards,

                          Hi Mark65,

Yes, WT3 users can upgrade to DATS software to use with their existing WT3 hardware. There is a fee of $15 for WT3 v2.0 users or $20 for users of WT3 v1.0. The details are here:

                          https://www.trueaudio.com/dats/dats_upgrades.htm

The difference in the DATS hardware is that it has a shorter startup time (30 sec vs. 90 sec). But DATS software is fully compatible with WT3 hardware.

                          Regards,

                            Hi Mike,

You can choose the input for the scope at the "Audio Device Selection" dialog under the Edit menu. The input and output devices are normally set to select the DATS hardware unit but other audio devices can be used with the DATS software. For example, if you select a notebook's built-in mic as the input device you will see mic signal on the scope when you run the generator and scope. Triggering can be selected between the Left and Right inputs of whatever signal is selected for input. You can use the DATS software with a general purpose PC sound system to have separate generator outputs and scope inputs.

                            Cheers!

                              Thanks John.
Maybe I'm just not doing this correctly. Here's a recent example of what I was trying to do.
I wanted to measure the time-alignment of a coax speaker. So, I was attempting to show one trace on the signal from the amp/soundcard, and the other trace on the signal from the microphone. This would show me the delay between the pulses of when the soundcard generated the signal, and then when the microphone picked up the sound from the speaker. By taking these two traces for each driver of the duplex, I could compare the time-alignment of the drivers. My problem is I never could figure out how to do this.
