  • Sub modeling,.. with or without room gain?

So, I came up with a slope for WinISD to simulate a generic room gain. I've made a habit of modeling with the slope. Obviously it allows a lower tuning while maintaining a flat response. I haven't actually built any new subs since I've started doing this. So I haven't really been able to test it out. I'm just wondering how many if any people account for room gain when modeling home subs, especially when choosing tuning for ported enclosures.

I *like* the lift below 40Hz the room gives me
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Accounting for cabin gain is a slippery slope, as every room is different. If it's for one specific room then it's a good idea, as is accounting for boundary loading.

        I don't.
In my case I was able to back the gain down 6db ( active subs ) with careful placement and taking advantage of mutual coupling and boundary loading.
Geddes demonstrated how he achieves desired bass response with out EQ by careful placement.

There are many variables involved affecting the sound of a speaker system, e.g. room size, room openings, speaker placement, wall and floor coverings, furniture.

I don't like marrying a speaker to a particular room by designing around the particular set of variables of that room. If any changes are made, sound will be affected. This would then require a change in the design which may or may not be hard to implement.

A far better solution is to design the speaker maximally flat and compensate for any required changes through the use of an external processor or the built-in equalization of most modern decent quality receivers.

i use bass boxpro to model subs.there are several gain modes to choose from and they all have variable frequency inputs.fwiw i always seem to like boundry loading more than optimal placement.i don't listen to music that much,my wife loves movies.the last offical count of movies was over 1300 movies:eek:

I do using Jeff's software, so far it's been very accurate. http://audio.claub.net/software/jbabgy/jbagby.html

I like that feature in Jeff's simulator. Only thing I'm never sure of is how to estimate "percent pressurization leakage," which can make a real difference in the final model.
