  • $1 aurasound drivers in an array?

How do you suppose these might work in some sort of line array or other multiple driver configuration? At $1.00 each when you buy 50, and 16 ohms nominal impedance, it looks like it might be a fun project. Any idea what it would take to do an array the sounds good with these? They'd probably still need a sub, but might they be decent otherwise?

That would be an interesting, and affordable way to get into line arrays Mike. Look like they would still need a subwoofer down low and some EQ work on the top end.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Mike I think these would be fun. Put one into Unibox and see what size box is. It would be nice to get to 80 hz.

QTS looks high enough, why not shoot for an open baffle line array? If you're going to need some eq and a sub anyways, seems like a no brainer.

Maybe do a full dipole, with 2 of these per side for bass duties? 4 of them comes in at $50, and another $50 for the auras, could be pretty impressive for the money.

            Hi John,
I can't get it down to 80. So far the best I've been able to do is an F3 of 90Hz. Tha's in WinISD. I plan on playing with Uniox too. I haven't bought these yet; I want to see if it looks like it might be worthwhile before I buy any. It's not like i need any more speakers. I actually need to thin the herd a little.
            Thanks,

I actually have 4 of these sitting around. Threw them in with a recent order. Even at $2.50 a pop normal price they don't look half bad. I was thinking micro desk top speakers with two paralleled, but they would definitely make an interesting array build. The build quality is just as good as other Aura drivers. Thick stamped frame for such a small driver. They have a coated cardboard flange around the surround, so I'm guessing they are meant to be rear mounted. If you like, I can run my DATS on a few of em and see how far off the TS params are.

Re: $1 aurasound drivers in an array?

based on the measurements madisound is posting, you can get a very nice line array build. Aura has a very high Qt and lands itself for a dipole or U-pole loading.
Because of the high frequency loss, you will need a very robust tweeter (center mounted) or DSP to compensate. Or may be a small line of tweeters.
Look at the Sony buyout project for info.
Aura looks better then Sony buyout because of the clean 1800-2000hz where Sony had issues.
Also, don't try to overextend low end of Aura. You will need Woofers not so much of a Sub-woofers to fill bottom end.
                Looks like a fun project.

I’m not as excited if I have to do a tweeter and woofer/ sub. That’s just me (lazy).

May be these at $2 for 30

You'll run in to exact same issues as with the 3" Aura. Unless it's not really a line array but rather a line source like 4 drivers or so, high frequency loss will be there the same or actually worst for a 5" mid-woofer.
As far as low end goes, I am not that familiar with Aura drivers. May be in to 70hz ish....?
Remember guys, drivers in the line array do not have same combine frequency response as individual driver. Tolvan to the rescue.

They are 3 dB less sensitive. I bought 4 of the GRS drivers Bolland linked just to get my feet wet with dipole bass understanding fully that with their 87 dB they aren't going to go real low or loud. Now that Mike brought up these Aura 2" drivers I think I know what my first adventure using the soon to arrive Omnimic will be

Wow, the cheapest shipping for 50 of the Aura NS3 for me is 23 bucks. The cheap ace in me thinks it takes some of the shine off of that deal although it's still less than $1.50 ea. I still may pull the trigger if for no other reason than to get plenty of practice with the router.

Not knowing anything about designing a line array, every time I look at these I have visions of them rear mounted in a baffle with a bevel or whatever on the driver cutouts almost like a waveguide. Not sure if that's possible without screwing up the center-to-center spacing, but that's just what I see when I look at these.
