Mike, just me thinking out loud, all you ideas are good, but to me the $1 Auras seem to fit a budget build. Maybe a budget tweeter and low end woofer setup. How are you handling the array drivers?

      Hi John,
I'm not completely sure how I'll handle them yet. I'm going to try to get them measured with my Omni-Mic tomorrow. I like the idea of budget; thus, the GRS woofers. I think I'll go with an H-frame with one per channel and save the other two for another project I have in mind. As far as tweeters, Roman suggested the RS28's, so I figured I'd go with them. However, if a less expensive tweeter will work, I'd gladly go that route. I'm not sure how low it'll need to go, so after I get the array measured, I'll look into a tweeter.
I've been trying to get my head wrapped around the H-frame idea tonight. I haven't yet seen how to figure the length or baffle size. Any suggestions for the 12" GRS?
      Thanks,
      Mike

        Hi Mike.

I have 4 of those GRS 12" drivers. I began playing with them in an open baffle experiment. John was very helpful. Unfortunately I got side tracked with other projects and never got back to them. I can tell you what I did learn. A pair of them per side did sound nice on a 14" wide baffle with 5" wings. They were crossed over using a 4.7 mH coil and 150 uF cap to a Vifa TC9F (can't remember the high pass circuit). Because of their wimpy Xmax they need to be high passed and complimented with a sub. Their frames are not pretty and extremely weak. So rear mounting is advised and don't over tighten the mounting screws. But I was surprised how natural they sounded.

Thanks Craig. Your info is very helpful, since my intention was to use them for the lower end support. GRS also makes a 15" that is listed as going lower, but it only has slightly more xmax: 4mm. Any ideas for a budget woofer that will work in some kind of OB, preferably an H-frame?

Another question... I have an opportunity to get a pair of EV 12 BW or a pair of Bozak B-199Bc. Anybody know if these would provide some low end from an H-frame or other OB?
            Thanks,

With OB bass you'll need multiple drivers to reach a decent SPL. Last time I simed it was 4 per side of the 12 inchers and 2 per side of the 15s. No reason you can't do sealed/ reflex bass and OB mid.

For the other drivers if you have the SD, FS and X-max I can run them through abc dipole.

Thanks John. If I bi-amp (Dayton APA150 on the woofers) will the SPL issue still hold true? I could go with 4 of the 12" GRS woofers per side, but Craig mentioned they need help with the low end. Plus I think I'd be getting larger than I want with 4/side.
I've seen a lot of projects in which this driver is used in an H-frame. http://www.parts-express.com/eminenc...river--290-405
If there will be issues with bass from a reasonably sized OB, I'll go with a conventional sealed or vented.

Mike, this thread http://techtalk.parts-express.com/sh...uot-Line-Array shows some graphs of a pair of GRS 12' in a u-frame.

                    Kenny,
                    That link doesn't work.

Thanks Kenny. That's encouraging. Any idea how much difference I'd see if I only went with one per side and gave the woofers their own amp (APA 150)? 27 inches is higher than I want to go. I've also been looking at the possibility of using one per side of this sub http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/55-2421 instead of an OB arrangement to keep the size where I'd like it.
                        Thanks again,

I used the GRS to keep price approx. $200 and continue with the OB theme. The 55-2421 is a good performer and should serve you well. Look forward to more posts.

It should, if you're measuring, you can wire the auras to match in FR. May make for easier XO design.
