Re: $1 aurasound drivers in an array? They're here!!!

Pick your listening distance... based on your listening distance. I like to pick 1 meter because that's what I'm going to measure at for a conventional speaker. Array ...I dont know

Also a bit nit picking but I use the driver diameter that coresonds to the SD of the driver. The frames etc. determine how close you can get.

Re: $1 aurasound drivers in an array? They're here!!!

OK gentlemen, I put the mic at 2 meters (my listening distance).
So does this show me that I need about 5.5 dB of BSC at 500Hz and should cross to the tweeter at 2KHz (this is before I use the compensation designer)?
If I use the compensation designer, I get the second screen shot. That seems to indicate I need to cross much lower than 2KHz; like at 1 KHz. Realizing I need to be closer to 2KHz to cross, should I use the components mentioned in the compensation designer dialog box?
      Thanks,
      Mike

Mike, see if you can get the spacing to actual build dimensions. I don't think you can get the cones touching.

          Thanks John. Will do.

I edited the previous post while you typed this response.

Re: $1 aurasound drivers in an array?

I realized I had the drivers as more than 100 mm when they should only be 72 mm. So I corrected that and spaced the drivers a little better and attached my results.

Mike, are you trying to avoid as much as possible of BSC by means of crossover and that's how you working the shape of the baffle?

                Hi Roman,
Not knowingly. What do you see that looks that way? I guess what I was doing was trying to get the response as flat as possible. Is that not necessary? Should I set the drivers and then use the crosssover to notch what needs notched according to what the graph shows? Should I use the compensation designer?
Thanks for helping. I truly appreciate it.

Re: $1 aurasound drivers in an array?

Next learner's question... Do I need to add a BSC circuit to this? I guess I'm trying to get a clear visual on what to do after I have the drivers mounted. I know I'll need to develop a crossover for the tweeter, but do I need to do anything with the graph in the previous post, or is that what I used the Edge for? I see between 2 and 3 dB above my crossover frequency, so I'm thinking I need to bring that down. Am I on the right track?
                    Thanks,
                    Mike

I think from here you can start building and measuring the actual response. You can then import data in PCD and start designing crossover.

Re: $1 aurasound drivers in an array?

From my experience PCD does not approximate the response of a dipole so designing a passive cross over is/ will be an iterative process.

I agree. PCD in this case can be used as a tool to adjust actual response by means of passive crossover and then listen to the results. I would add that it'll be more so of an interactive process then a conventional loudspeaker system. Not only it's a dipole, it's also line source with a single tweeter.
Not a bad thing tho. This is an interesting part of the speaker design. Lot more fun then cutting 20 holes.

I bought a hole saw for that purpose, so I hope it lasts. I figure I'll rear mount the drivers and use either a chamer bit or a round over bit so it lessens the "tunnels" in which the drivers will be sitting. I'm also thinking half inch MDF or particle board for the baffle, so the drives are recessed as much as they would be in thicker stock.
Thanks for all the help John and Roman,

Mike, if you’re not planning to measure I assume you are considering bi amp and active x-o?

Good point John. I recently bought a measuring set-up from another PETT member so maybe I can learn how to use it from some seasoned veterans ;)
