Thanks Darren. I guess hanging my hat by the speakers is as good of a place as any. However, the hat's presence wasn't planned.

It'll be interesting to see the measurements and deal with the crossover.
have you decided on a bass unit?

I plan on making a separate baffle and joining it to the side of the main baffle. I need to keep it as small as possible so I don't throw of the baffle step any more than absolutely necessary.

Thanks for your service Darren. I hit my mandatory retirement date in April 2015. I'm not looking forward to it, but it is what it is. The military has been great to me. I'm a signal guy, 25U40, with a chemical identifier.

I haven't decided yet. I have a few woofers on the shelf I'll be trying. A couple of NLA Seas drivers, a pair of 10" woofs from a pair of Infinity Qa's, a pair of MCM 10" woofs, a pair of old Bose 501 woofers, a pair of Fisher 12" woofers, and a couple of old radio Shack subs- a 6" and a 10". If none of those are to my liking, I'll have to get some ideas. Any suggestions from my list or otherwise? I'm doing OK now with the bass; I have a small 8" sub that I run with some of my other speakers just to round out the bottom end.
Another thought I have is to give the woofers their own amp; bi-amp set up. I have an APA 150 sitting on the shelf waiting for gainful employment. It's nice since it's setup up to run either single or two-channel. Hmmmm??????

And thank you for yours. Military was good to me too.
I built my first monster pair of speakers in 1983 while stationed in Germany as a PFC at the Ansbach craft shop. Those babys were almost as tall as me. But back then all we 20 year old guys wanted was monster loud speakers. 1SG had a field day taking them all away for playing them too loud LOL

                    Mike,
Nice job. Yes set up your mic at ear level which for me equals tweeter level and measure from there. If you’re passive, that means to me setting up measurements at 1 meter distance.

In general your tweeter to mid spacing should be less that your x-o point. Closer is better for off axis.

You’ll want a hi pass on the Aura’s which should give you a bit of a bump on the low end.

So these should make Iowa this year right?

The distance between the tweeter and midwoofer only remains true in consideration of the crossover point, to the nearest two woofers.

                        Hi John,
I certainly plan on bringing them to Iowa. Thanks for the tip about the hi pass. I'll have to look through my "scrounge box" to see what parts I have. I usually buy extra caps since they're relatively inexpensive. Inductors on the other hand.... I have a few, and I can combine some to make values other than what I already have.
                        Thanks,
                        Mike

Once I figure what I'm going to do for the bass, I'll know how high they'll sit. My idea thus far has been to put them on boxes approximately 12" x 12" with a bass unit (possibly a sub) in them. I'll decide where the tweeter will go then, and I think I'll put it on the wide side of the baffle, snuggled up close to the mid-woofers.

For the woofer? I know absolutely nothing about H or U baffle other than they are types of open baffle arrangements. Any advantages/disadvantages to them compared to closed, vented, bandpass?
This speaker is a real learning experience for me. I plan to place an order for a good arrangement of x-over parts before too long. I'm really trying to get the concept of this hobby in my mind, so any advice and explanations are greatly appreciated. I plan to do a lot of experimenting with this one and another build (Visaton W170S and Vifa DX25TG09-04) I'm working on.
                              Thanks,

It appears that you gain a lower f3 and flatter response in it's band width, but lose efficency.
