  • Best mid for RAAL 140-15D with passive crossover

So i got my RAAL 140-15D and have been in search for the mid that can keep up with it...and after reading various commercial and DIY i have come up to following drivers...i am keeping these as open baffle more like philharmonic speaker...

    Accuton Mids

    Scan Speak 18W

    Neo 10

I currently have H-frame AE IB15 from 150hz and below using active crossover...and i want to pass 200 and up to RAAL and Mid combination....
i want to crossed around 2.5-3.5 KHz onwards to RAAL.....any input any suggestions.....

i would suggest checking with John at AE on which TD6 he would recommend ,there are a few other guys on here that have experience with RAAL and Accoton , i would wait until they chime in before making any decisions

I'd consider a four way. FYI, Philharmonic speakers are not open baffle until @ 650hz, making it a much easier load on the mid than 200hz.

From 200hz and up you can use more or less any 7" driver. The SB Satori tested by Zaph would be an excellent candidate. The SS 18W and the Excel W18NX are two other that would work well IMO.

I am also looking at Accuton mids or SS 18W....question is how to design the passive crossover for them....anyone have the raw data i can punch for SS 18w and raal in the excel sheet and play around...

If you want to utilize the inherent sensitivity offered by the RAAL, stick with the higher sensitivity mids.

Audio Technology makes an excellent dedicated mid.

            C-Quenze 15 H 52 12 06 SDKM

It has a unique surround that extends the cone profile and offers amazing extension. 91dB sensitive too. We're using it and the Accuton Neo mid paired with the 70-20XR and the results are simply incredible.

AudioTech, Accuton, Neo10 would be my choices.

Rick Craig may be able to help you out, he's probably worked with both drivers before.

Do you have an Omni mic or DATS?

                      i got this one...

7" Revelator mid/woofer features a non-resonant cone and dust cap structure, dynamic linear suspension, SD-1 magnet system, "Grasshopper" cast chassis with maximized air flow and resonance terminating mounting system. Less resonance in all structures, lower compression and higher linearity, faster termination of excess energy and higher sound pressure capability. The 18W/4531G should have an F3 of about 65Hz sealed and 40Hz vented.

                      hows this with RAAL.....???

With the primary inductance of the RAAL transformer and your desired XO points, you might get away with something as simple as a single cap and padding resistor for the RAAL. That will get you a second order HP filter and likely a LR2 acoustic response. The 18W will likely be acoustically behind the RAAL whereas the shallower NEO10 or AT mid are basically lined up already.

that is a great start...atleast easier to build...i think if i am using LR2 might have to change phase connections of one of the drivers....any suggesstions for a good demo software.....which can do simulation...

                            I'd splurge for an omnimic.

The 140-15 can be a little tricky to work with. You'll need measurement capability to make the best of your design.
