I'm thinking of making an isobaric sub (around 8")and might go the route of having the driver basket sticking out, a la Wilson Benesch etc - I dont really want an ugly pressed frame driver basket on show- apart from the sexy Vifa subs (not suitable) which others shd I consider?

Re: Best looking woofer basket/chassis, in your opinion
My first question is why do you want an isobaric? Is it a particular look you are after? Performance wise, there really is no benefit to using iso any longer. There are many drivers on the market that can give the performance of an iso with out using 2 drivers.

If it must be isobaric, there are not many prettier than these (specs aside)....

Seriously, if esthetics are the concern, all driver baskets and magnets are ugly. Some less ugly than others, but still ugly.
Sticking that end out of a box is never going to look good.I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

Re: Best looking woofer basket/chassis, in your opinion
Sorry, Wolf, but that's an UGLY byootox... no matter how sexy the technology. The only reason I can think of to justify exposing one's ugly byootox like that is to cancel motor nonlinearities and, IMHO, this is more efficiently done with two drivers with one mounted inverted and out of phase with the other... not isobaric. Seeing an ugly byootox like that would most certainly make my low-end turn mushy and droop.

Ben, you do anything with that big ol' thing, yet?
Bryan, the JBL GTO line looks suspiciously like it draws a lot of engineering cues from the Infinity Kappa line... Which is another option.
The realm of sexy backsides is definitely car audio. The better car audio subs will perform equal to the better home audio stuff, too.Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Ben, if you think thats pretty, good looking, whatever, more power to you.
But I can tell you that's an ugly backside. I appreciate the design and construction, but it's not pretty.I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

The problem I see with high excursion subs facing magnet side out is that there can be substantial 'chuffing' sounds coming from the vented pole piece on many subs. I made several subwoofers a long time ago with the drivers facing out and I could occasionally hear the 'chuffing' sounds coming from the pole vent. I didn't see it as a serious problem, though. But it's something to think about.

RE Good Looks: Technologically compelling and good-looking are two very different things.
