  • Tang Band W3-881SI 6th grade project.

I volunteer with a 6th grade group of boys I always thought it would be fun to build a set of speakers with them so now is my chance. March 28th we are all meeting at my hose to build a set of speakers.
I will have all the pieces cut for them and it will be a simple box out of mdf and maybe a hardwood front baffle if I can find the time.
What I have so far is a 5.5" wide 14" talll 8" deep tuned to 54hz (It models ok but I cant measure it)

I imagine the speakers will be used near field on a desk or in a small room on a shelf.
I think the speaker would look good with the driver close to the top of the box but will it sound better in the center?
I know some people use a simple bsc on this speaker and many other small drivers use a cap to block out the bass. Will I need much bsc? Would a bass blocker (cap) help protect the speaker from 12 year olds?
Thanks for the help I think this will be a fun project.

The BSC I came up with for mine was a 1.0mH coil and a 4-8 ohm resistor. That can drive up the cost over 14 pairs considerably. However, they will probably be sitting on a desk or tucked on a shelf so BSC is probably not 100% necessary.

Pics when it happens! I would love to see a room full of kids gluing baffles up!
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Did you already buy the drivers? If not, this might make for a better project with more bass. https://sites.google.com/site/undefinition/sprite The drivers are a tad more, but should still be doable. http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com...ne-wide-range/

As far as the bass blocker goes, it would depend on how much power they are getting.

These aren't really capable of much (if any) bass.
They can only handle their rated 15w down to 400Hz w/out exceeding Xmax (in ANY box, or tuning).

WinISD likes 0.06 cf, and I think it COULD be OK in about 0.10 cf, tuned to the high 80's, where it'll make it into the mid 80's.
YOUR box, SEEMS like its close to 0.20 cf, and I don't see a tuning in the 50's working at all. Its F3 models near 180Hz, almost the same as a closed box. They DO have an F6 near 80Hz, but can't take more than 1/4w at that frequency w/out exceeding Xmax.

Now, an NS3 in that box would really impress some people.

ns3 is doable will it need a filter?

Box is about 5.3 liters, NS5

Go sealed F3 95, or ½ inch hole in ¾ inch mdf for ported F3 83

Although I’m a bit down on the Auras as my NS3 4 ohms aren’t near the specs.

But as Chris said the NS3-193 8 ohms would be quite nice and could run without a filter

Search for my "Pico Neo". Just that NS3 in 0.15cf (that's about 3/4ths the size of your box I think), with a 1-1/4"dia. by 7" long vent. I saw in one of the links above that they are STILL only $12.50 each. I've used "circle hole" saws (in a drill press) for all 3 holes: woofer, port, and a 2" hole saw is perfect for the #260-297 terminal cup. No crossover required. The drivers are quite rugged as well, and there's no dustcap for little kids to poke in.

You'll want your own pair, honestly. Also, these LOVE to be pushed by the little $20-$25 Lepai 2020A amp.

Or look up my "PC": NS3-193-8, 4" internal cube stuffed with lining on the interior rear wall, and a 500uF cap in series. No more, no less. Loved by many!

I had my 881SI cranking, the advertised Xmax is incorrect. Then again, I have actually used it.

                    Ken,

A lot of folks have been happy w/ the TB in simple TL/folded TL. 55 Hz is the typical tuning. Johnny's bsc is pretty close to the examples I have.

                    You have a pm.

Re: Tang Band W3-881SI 6th grade project.

The Pico neos have peeked my interest. Here is why: I can make box kits for this pretty easy to assemble and their is no crossover to build (no burnt kids). Even though this means spending more on the driver the lack of a crossover actually makes it cheaper.
I see that some people put the port on the back some put it in the front I think that the front would work better for my assembly and manufacturing time.
I will get the boxes cut and use a system of rabbets to make the parts line up easy. The students will only have to screw and glue them together.
Looks like I'll be in the speaker kit biz for a little while. I will probly have to build 14 boxes maybe more.

sounds like a good excuse to buy more clamps to me...

anyhow, not sure if you've thought about finishes or even want to bother with it, but for 5 MDF sides, roll on paint + primer actually works pretty well. (obviously better if you sand in between coats, but that adds time and work that may not be worth it). the home depot / lowes "reject" paint bin is a good place to look... lots of choices for $2/qt or $6/gal that may give them some options without breaking the bank.

the cell phone photo's not the best, but this is just 2 coats with a 220 grit power sanding in between, and a coat of polyshades on the baffle.

I got almost half the pieces cut shure was nice to make some sawdust. I hope to have all the pieces cut this weekend and start the joint work and baffle next week.

How would the 881 work as a dedicated mid?
