  • Anyone Finish Speaker Cabinets With Kitchen Countertop Laminate?

Has anyone ever finished speaker cabinets with kitchen countertop laminate? If so, how difficult was it to do? And how is it holding up? I'd have to assume it's fairly durable.

I was thinking this '50s boomerang pattern would be perfect for a mid-century home. It's available at Lowe's in charcoal only. The other colors have been discontinued.

I have used it. Just used contact cement. It looked good except I was not happy with the big edge seams. If I were to do it again, I would do a hardwood baffle & top to hide them.

I have used it. You do need good square boxes, and yes, it's pretty thick so the edges show. Wolf uses it.

If you miter the edges, they won't show.

I've used WilsonArt black laminate for years with several speaker projects. My design usually has real wood panels for the side cheeks and top with black laminate front and rear baffles. The laminate is applied to the MDF baffles before triming and hole routing. I flush mount magnets for grill frame attachment in the MDF under the laminate before it is bonded. Excellent results as shown in the link--real cherry side panels and CSS low distortion drivers-- for my MLTL version of Jeff Bagby's Triton MTM speaker design.

I've used black Formica on the backs and tops of a few recent builds. It's easy to apply with contact adhesive - I used water based. See the C-Note's and Lydias in my sig. Since I used a combination of Formica and veneer the only seems were on the back of the cabinet.

Re: Anyone Finish Speaker Cabinets With Kitchen Countertop Laminate?

The formica look can be a nice one, but for very geometric shaped cabinets.

Everyone else is correct that you will definitely see the "seams" on any corner. This isn't necessarily a bad look, but may not work with the pattern/color that you are looking at.

For reference, look at some of the older NHT speakers (like the 2.5i), these used a Wilsonart Gloss Black laminate. They had corner seams but being a dark material they looked OK.

You may want to try to find some aluminum beading to cover some of the corners. That would look very retro!

(P.S., as for the other colors of the boomerang pattern, last time I looked these were not being sold at Lowe's because they were made exclusive to several distributors of "vintage" kitchen supplies. You can find and order these other colors through these exclusive channels, but of course price is about 4x higher :( I know this because I am in to retro and was looking into doing a retro countertop build.)

I used a matt finish black on a sub build over 24" dia sonotube. I had it professionally installed by a local friend who is a cabinet maker. You can barely tell where the vertical joint is, plus being on a round surface, the joint is in the corner of the room, not visible anyways.Click image for larger version

Thanks for the replies everyone. This sounds like the route I'll go when I start my next DIY project in 2014.

Thanks! I like the older Ken Kantor era NHT speakers. A friend of mine has a set of 2.5i's and I have a set of Super Twos. I'll probably upgrade the caps in the Super Twos this winter.

My kitchen countertops are finished in the original coral boomerang pattern. I like it. My house was built in the mid-'50s.

Re: Anyone Finish Speaker Cabinets With Kitchen Countertop Laminate?

I special order my laminate from Lowes, use a solid carbide flush trim bit, use crisco shortening as a lube against laminate, and this is my favorite tool for the edges

                    http://www.grizzly.com/products/Mica-Knife/H4205

Filing the edges was no fun untill I started to use this. You will still need to file a bit, corners, etc.
