  • How loud do you listen?

    HI,

I searched around for this and didn't see anything. I hope I didn't miss it and am not wasting everyone's time.

So, how loud do you all listen on average for music and movies?

If I am just listening and it won't be bothering anyone I am around 80db average level (unweighted measurement) for each. When I switch to measure instantaneous peak levels the music is around 95 and the movies around 104. This is when I want to immerse myself. Once in awhile I am louder than this, often quieter.....

This is just measured using the StudioSix Digital AudioTools app on my iphone. Certainly not calibrated, but pretty good as far as mobile app sound measurement tools go. Overall level matches a cheap Nady meter at church pretty well.

So how loud is average for you folks.

For an action movie, I've occasionally hit 110 dB, but it's pretty rare. I think 105 dB is more typical of something blowing up in a movie. I adjust the dialog for a "normal" level, and let the LFE fall where it may.

For music, I'm normally under 80 dB I think. Sometimes I'll push something like my Cream concert DVD to 93 dB, or a little more.

I use to have get togethers at my house where about 15 of my friends would attend and would play music for about 24 hours sometimes at high levels, those were the days.now that I'm older I hardly ever pump up the volume.Just like quality sound high SPLs don't really matter anymore.I quess that's how it is when you get old.

Low 80s usually, unless I'm working out, then its 90s easily.

My wife says an F-18 could fly by next to the house and I wouldn't hear it over my music but I don't think it's that loud....

75 average, with peaks around 85-90 depending on source. Rarely I will crank it up.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

Haven't measured, but based on the levels at MWAF, I usually listen somewhere around 70-75.

When music peaks at 95 I consider this "loud". I am typically well below this level. So our levels are similar.

In my room,,,, 85db seems loud. 95db,,,,,too much. Could be my system,,,, but peaks of 85 to 88,,,,, Sweet! 92 to 95,,,,, too much. YMMV. Mark

If the app on my cell is somewhat accurate, I'd say about 75. I live in a quiet neighborhood with very little traffic and that seems to be a comfortable level where I can hear the detail I like.

It might be some what accurate at lower levels, but on my phone at least, the decibel meter seems pretty useless above 85db. I once put it pretty close to a PA loudspeaker and it just wouldn't read any louder.

It sounds like I'm right in the range of most here. The big variable here is measurement device, weighting applied, and the response velocity (average, slow, fast, impulse, peak....).

BTW, now playing is Mark Knopler "Shangri La". I love Knopfler. Beautifully recorded and beautifully played.
