  • 3way Kappalite 3012LF + Satori 4ohm + RAAL 70-10D

This is an attempt to create a reference speakers for myself and using DATS & Omnimic for the first time to design a loudspeaker.

i got measurement done, i was going to measure outdoor, but this afternoon it was so noisy outside that my omnimic clocking at 65-70db noise constantly that i did in room instead.

    the setup was :

    1. 1.2m distance for the speakers with Satori and RAAL in sealed box then the Kappalite with vented on separate box.
    2. Kappalite 3012LF in 83.6L with dimension of W 400mm x H 600mm x D 450mm; vent ø110mm x Lv 150mm
    3. Satori sealed 15.4L with dimension of W 276mm x H 376mm x D 240mm.

simulated box for 3012LF and Satori

omnimic measurement on RAAL @1.2m on axis 1/48th smoothing

the thing is, i always get dropping response in RAAL, is this omnimic problem?

          Re: 3way Kappalite 3012LF + Satori 4ohm + RAAL 70-10D

          z-offset are -0.022 for midrange and -0.09 for 3012LF
vertical offset are -0.145 for midrange and -0.505 for 3012LF

im using PCD to create the crossover, this is my first time, so here are my questions :D

          1. Is it correct to use on axis measurement for creating transfer function? assuming if we input the vertical and z-offset the pcd will simulated it?
          2. i got horrible peaks and dips across the response that i dont know which ones i should address it first. the standout hump would be the baffle step around 600-1khz.
          3. im trying to use first order electrical to achieve LR2, this is possible, but again i dont know how to address the dips and peaks.

any help will be greatly appreciated,

          cheers

Roman measured a similar high end droop in the RAAL he measured. I believe he took his measurements in SoundEasy.
Don't listen to me - I have not sold any $150,000 speakers.

If you want to verify your tweeter, you can send it to me with the return shipping label and I'll measure it on a wide baffle, calibrated mic, Sound Easy. I also have Omni Mic and can check it with mine but usually Omni and SE give very close results with the difference in presentation.
For shi.ts and giggles I have Raven R1 on hands and permission to publish measurements by the owner. That should be interesting too.
Henry, can you post graphic files of your responses? I don't have any audio software on my home puter.

The 70-10D measures very flat. Which test track number did you use?

                  hi rick,

i used track 2, mono sine sweep. i think when i measured both speakers in pseudo noise, the highs improve, but i didnt save the graph.

                  hi r-carpenter,

Can you post one of the RAAL from a closer distance and see if the top octave improves?

15 mSec is a very long gate time. When you do the sweep look at the impulse and see at what point ripples begin to develop in the impulse response after the initial impulse has settled back to a flat line. These ripples are reflections. Then set you gate time inside the time of the first reflection. This will give you a much cleaner response curve.
