I have tried this and abandoned it in the way you are mounting them. Maybe cut the drywall out behind them and insulate? I gave up after a few different materials and installed inwall's. If you hang them out away from the wall you will probably get decent sound on axis....but not sitting underneath them.

There is no drywall, brick, mortar and plaster.

Gotcha, I didn't notice that. IF you have one playing, and hold it in your hand, then move it away from the wall you will hear a huge difference as you move out. My guess is the reflections are really doing bad things. I didn't try to mitigate with any sort of insulation behind it to experiment, you may try that. I ended up giving the two panels to a friend that has them sitting on the top front of his garage cabinents and are about 20" away from the wall they do pretty good there. I was using the plastic corrugated poster board. I hope that helps.

That really is an awesome DIY project and it's a two-fer. You got both wall hanging art and surround sound speakers with some DIY input from both yourself and your wife. How awesome is that?

Well, they are on a wall again. Playing tunes in my "home office".
I'm planing to eq and xo them to a sub using a minidsp.
That should be interesting.
