  • Best design that will work in PE MTM 1.0 cu ft enclosure?

For 2 channel stereo listening. Accuracy, detail, imaging major goals. Will be used with subwoofer.

    Existing designs preferred.

I will be building these for my cousin that is getting back into audio after years.

    Thanks

This one looks pretty hard to beat

What's your budget? There's some fairly high priced kits that make use of that cabinet as well.

The PE catalog has two MTM 1 cu. Ft. kits. These ain't cheap either. One uses Usher drivers and the other Dayton Ref. drivers. The OP wants the "BEST" though. My issue with 'best' threads is responses vary a lot and who's to decide what's 'best' in this highly subjective hobby.

The budget isn't a major concern. Let's say up to $1000 including the cabinets, less would be better.

I'll check into the Jeff Bagby design you linked.

        Thanks

He wants to avoid using the Usher drivers, since his last speakers used them. He wants to try something different.

The Dayton kit (based on the Dr. K's) looks interesting.

        Thanks

        Keep the recommendations coming!

I was going to suggest Jeff's excellent RS180 MTM - the Dr K MTM is a few years older, and most people would
say that Jeff's design is pretty much the best you can do with those drivers. My Galeon design is very good,
but it would probably sound more like the Ushers, since it has paper (papyrus) cones.

I would bet that Jeff's RS180 MTM design would sound great. In fact I have those exact drivers on hand but would prefer to try my hand at my own xo design vs copying his. Only problem is I have already studied his xo design so anything I would attempt most likely would be influenced by his work :o

Love this one & not expensive. Plus you can build the crossovers in 30 minutes.

I am not limited to those drivers. I believe with a budget that could be as much as $1000, I could use better.

Not looking to be too inexpensive on this project, unless the extra $$ is not justified.

I'm gonna say one of three PE RS 180 designs, of which I've only built one. The Natalie P, Jeff Bs MTM, or the Modula MTM at htguide all look to be very well executed designs with above average drivers that, in good hands, are very competitive with the "best". IMHO

A more expensive option like this almost seems like a waste used with a sub. I guess you could always just leave it sealed.

I was just about to recommend the Selah SSR's. I have them and they sound incredible. IMO.
Might be just a touch above $1000 when you're done though, but worth it.

another one to consider is the "Stiff Breeze " , a MTM using wavecor mids and Raal tweeters ,check with Pete to see if baffle will fit the 1.0 cab .

Well if you are feeling like the RS180 MTM's are a little low on price you could look at some other options. My suggestions are budget busters and aren't designed for the PE cabinet but they do have cabinets available. I've heard none, and the RS series certainly are very good bang for the buck and it's tough to say if any of the other designs would offer much advantage. I'm not aware of many MTM designs intermediate between RS180 or similar systems and some of these higher end systems.

This is a thread discussing a kit based on the Stiff Breeze MTM from Vapor Audio. They supply baffle, drivers and all other parts. You just buy the cabinet from PE.

                            thread here http://techtalk.parts-express.com/ar...?t-236424.html

                            Vapor Audio Page here http://www.vaporsound.com/#Speakers

There is the Zalytron Aria 6 or Aria 7. MTM's based on Focal W cone woofers and tioxid tweeters. These are clearly very good products but the price is a little high if you buy their cabinets. Unfortunately it doesn't really look like they would work well in the PE cabinets. Just go to http://www.zalytron.com/ and click the link for premium then look for Aria 6.

ER18 MTM might be nice but it is designed for the MLTL floorstanding enclosure. I'm not sure how the design would work in a smaller standard ported enclosure. A quick model does suggest that a pair of the Seas ER18 in an MTM with around .5CF for each (AKA the 1.0cf PE cab) would give an F3 around 48 with an Fb of 45 to 48. So, it would seem that could work out well. I'm not sure if you are able to cut baffles to match the drivers though.

                            Just some thoughts.

The Jeff Bagby speaker is available (soon) from diysoundgroup with a precut baffle. Don't know if that would exactly match the PE cab. The dollar price shown means it's not available yet. Diysoundgroup is a low profit venture.
