I know this is an older thread but I just built myself one of these. I wish I had done it years ago. I never really took it seriously as a 'real' subwoofer due to the size but it really performs nicely. I use it with a low powered tube amp for music in a decent sized room; it really adds the lower frequencies and blends easily with my speakers. I've tried 3 other subwoofers ($300 DIY to $700 factory built) in the same setup and this one sounds the best.

I'm going to build a second one for that room and then one more for my computer room setup.

I use the Dayton SA100, I had it from using with a dayton 8" sub so it is probably overkill here as I don't think this would like that much power but I keep the gain fairly low. My listening levels are usually pretty low.

I'd love to find an amp for it that wouldn't thump when the power gets disconnected and reconnected. Not only could I make it switch off completely with the amp but when our power blinks it is an interesting sound in the middle of the night.

I'm planning to build one more of these.

Apologies for bringing up and old thread. Iâ€™m just getting parts together to build a Voxel. The Dayton SA70 plate amp extends so far into the sub box that itâ€™ll decrease the total internal volume. Has this been taken into account? Or should the box be increased in size to accommodate the plate amplifier?

It should be increased to accommodate the plate amp.

If someone made a plate amp that was small enough and had certain features (like a quality adjustable crossover, non thump when powering off, etc.) this little sub would then go from outstanding to absolutely freaking fantastic.

The one I built I used the Lepai LP210pa, but I personally wouldn't recommend it (the amp). In the right situation I can get it sounding good, but otherwise it's just not a very good unit (that plate amp also rattles and is near impossible to knock that completely down). It does, however, sound good with my Tivoli Model Two setup (as it has a sub out) when positioned correctly and that's where I primarily use it now.

For fun, I've also hooked it to my 80's Panasonic "boom box" via the RCA line out ports. It's a line level out so the volume adjustment must be made at the plate amp, but otherwise I've fooled a friend or two into thinking the Panasonic can dig down to 40Hz.

This newer Dayton plate amp is 100 watts for 100 dollars as opposed to the 70 watt for 72 bucks...

It has no plastic back so it shouldn't take any extra space in a 3/4" box.

There are also small class D deaktop options for $80 or so that won't even need an enclosure mount. Check out Amazon for some of those. I've been using a Nobsound G2 Pro 300 watt sub amp for several months and it's great.

My Lepai measures 4.5" x 5" x 1" and fits on the narrow back side (non port side) of the Voxel. Perfect size, but crappy sub amp.

That new Dayton looks like a *much* better sub amp but measures 8-1/16" H x 7-1/16" W x 2-1/8" D. It'd fit on the side opposite the woofer. I'd probably build it out a touch to account for the slightly extra internal room (if using 1/2" plywood).
