I do have both versions of the W5-1138, by the way. Yes, the design can be adapted for it, but the tuning would most likely need to be adjusted.

What would I need to do if I wanted to use the other subwoofer instead of the actual one you have listed?

I put this question to Paul in another thread. He replied that he had no stuffing in the Voxel that he build and typically doesnt stuff a vented sub. He did not discourage experimentation though.

Mechanical noise. I made a subwoofer/2.1 system for my brother in law a few years back designed around the neo version and it made so much noise, it was clearly audible above the music.

I had three of these that I purchased several years ago when they were very cheap and I tried all three. Two of them were just way too loud, the third was less noisy, but I still couldn't use it. I ended up using the 6.5 in it's place and it worked well. Nothing seemed to be coming apart on them, so I don't really know what the noise was coming from, but it was loud. These were probably purchased in the neighborhood of 5-6 years ago.

IIRC, the 1138 was early on plagued with VC rocking in the gap. I know the 1363 was later made a dual spider driver due to this reason, and all 3 models now IIRC have opposed terminal connections to limit this issue. I do know my 2x 'Triumph' 1138 subs are not noisy, but the original Comp5 was a little rocky. The one in the Comp5 was an original model, and the Triumphs are later units; all neo.

That must be the reason, then. They were early units bought years ago when they were cheap.
I couldn't find any defect on them at the time to be causing any noise issues.

I wonder if adding a slight amount of weight to the opposite side of the cone would help to counteract the rocking? I was very surprised to discover how loud it was.
They've been sitting in storage ever since. I'll have to break these out soon to mess with them some more.

I brought this project to InDIYana 2013, but never put any info out there about it. A thread a few days ago asking for a small sub prompted me to get myself in gear and post the plans.

I designed the sub around this amp, although obviously any sub plate amp will work (depending on how creative you want to get mounting it to the somewhat small enclosure). Is this amp truly 68 Watts? Probably not, however it has the neat bonus of allowing you to add bookshelf speakers to create a 2.1 setup.

The only other things you need to do this project are:

• TB W5-1138SMF (great little workhorse)
• 2 of these vents, glued end-to-end
• 1/2" plywood or MDF.

The approximate volume of the enclosure is around 7 Liters, and it should reach an F3 of 35 Hz. I don't have an exact number for the max SPL, but in theory it should be able to get to 98 dB before the amp runs out of steam. The port diameter may be the weakest link here, and would probably chuff pretty bad if pushed any harder. That driver, it just goes and goes; this is the kind of thing it was meant to do.
