  • Army Surplus Boomers? Driver help needed

Howdy, all. Some time ago I traded some gear for four cool military-surplus loudspeaker cabinets; but my wife says I “need to do something with them,” perhaps to convert one or more of them to battery-powered boomboxes. The exterior finishes are oxidized, but the cabinet construction is very solid with good internal bracing and easily refinished. The cabinets were originally designed as extension loudspeakers for 16mm film projectors. I need to replace the old 10” driver(s) which sound pretty bad after actually hanging in a cattle auction barn for 50+ years.

Choosing an amp/battery/charger, etc., is relatively simple. But in this season of my life I just do not have time to learn T-S driver specs, BassBox software, crossover nuances, etc. I would appreciate any recommendations for 8” or 10” full-range or coaxial drivers for these cabinets and port dimensions, if recommended. I could set the cabinet up either sealed or ported. Cost is an object, so no need to get fancy.

I had originally considered using them as P.A. loudspeaker cabinets using the Eminence Beta-8cx coaxial driver, as the recommended enclosure volume is a good match. However, the total cost including compression driver and crossover is more than I want to spend on this project.

    The internal cabinet dimensions are approximately 13” x 15” x 8” = 520 in3 = 8.52 Liters.

Thanks in advance for any assistance! (I would also entertain selling the whole wretched mess as-is, as they are taking up too much space in the rafters of my garage).

    Regards, Pete.

Those would make sweet retro guitar speaker cabs! That's the best idea I got.

Welcome The link above seems like a good choice. These two would also work, but will need a tweeter for full range use: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-...oofer--295-030
Celestion TF1018 10" Professional Speaker 100WThe Celestion TF1018 10" pro speaker features a durable stamped steel frame, 1.75" high-temp voice coil, and 31 oz. ceramic ferrite magnet. Its wide range response, good efficiency, and durable construction make it an ideal choice for 2-way and 3-way PA loudspeaker systems.

Those cabinets looked larger for 8 liters, the volume I got with the dimensions provided was 1560ci, or about .90ft, which is usable. I like the guitar amp idea bolland mentioned.

These are cool vintage cabinets. I can see why you traded for them. My thought is to search the project gallery and find a two way that will work in 8 liters. Create a sub baffle behind the metal grill for mounting the woofer. It’s not perfect, but can be cheap and easy.

I second the guitar cab idea, at least for one or two. With a little work they could be pretty desirable to guitar guys looking for something retro and unique.

Great idea. I had not considered guitar speakers since they are closed cabinets. Nuts, I'll give it a try with the existing vintage drivers.
              Thanks. -Pete
